İstanbul Stephan (Bulgar) Kilisesi

Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'ndaki Bulgar azınlığı, Fener Ortodoks Patrikhanesi'ne bağlı kiliselerde ibadet ederdi . Bulgar milliyetçiliğinin artmasıyla birlikte, Bulgar topluluğu 19. yüzyılda kendi kilisesini inşa etti. İlk olarak, şu anki kilisenin bulunduğu Balat ve Fener meydanları arasındaki Haliç kıyısında küçük bir ahşap kilise inşa edildi , ancak daha sonra bu daha büyük bir binaya dönüştürüldü. Arazinin zayıf temelleri nedeniyle beton yerine demir iskelet tercih edildi. İnşaat planlarını İstanbul'da yaşayan Ermeni Hovsep Aznavur hazırladı. Kilisenin prefabrik parçalarının üretimi için uluslararası bir yarışma düzenlendi. Yarışmayı Avusturyalı bir firma olan R. Ph. Wagner kazandı.

İstanbul Stephan (Bulgar) Kilisesi

Önceden üretilmiş parçalar Viyana'da imal edildi ve Tuna Nehri üzerinden ve Karadeniz yoluyla gemiyle İstanbul'a taşındı. Bir buçuk yıl sonra, 1898'de tamamlandı . Kilisenin ana iskeleti çelikten yapılmış ve metal levhalarla kaplanmıştı. Tüm metal parçalar somun, cıvata, perçin veya kaynakla birleştirilmişti. Mimari tarzı Neo-Gotik ve Neo-Barok akımlarından esinlenmiştir.
