Stephan (Βουλγαρική) Εκκλησία της Κωνσταντινούπολης

Η βουλγαρική μειονότητα της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας συνήθιζε να προσεύχεται στις εκκλησίες του Ορθόδοξου Πατριαρχείου Φαναριού . Με την αύξηση του βουλγαρικού εθνικισμού, η βουλγαρική κοινότητα έχτισε τη δική της εκκλησία τον 19ο αιώνα . Αρχικά, χτίστηκε μια μικρή ξύλινη εκκλησία στην όχθη του Κεράτιου Κόλπου, ανάμεσα στις πλατείες Μπαλάτ και Φαναριού , όπου βρίσκεται η σημερινή εκκλησία, αλλά αργότερα αυτή εξελίχθηκε σε ένα μεγαλύτερο κτίριο. Επιλέχθηκε σιδερένιος σκελετός αντί για σκυρόδεμα λόγω των αδύναμων θεμελίων του χώρου. Ο Χοβσέπ Αζναβούρ , Αρμένιος Κωνσταντινουπολίτης, ετοίμασε τα σχέδια κατασκευής. Διεξήχθη διεθνής διαγωνισμός για την κατασκευή των προκατασκευασμένων τμημάτων της εκκλησίας. Μια αυστριακή εταιρεία, η R. Ph. Wagner , κέρδισε τον διαγωνισμό.

Stephan (Βουλγαρική) Εκκλησία της Κωνσταντινούπολης

Τα προκατασκευασμένα μέρη κατασκευάστηκαν στη Βιέννη και μεταφέρθηκαν στην Κωνσταντινούπολη με πλοίο κατά μήκος του Δούναβη και μέσω της Μαύρης Θάλασσας. Μετά από ενάμιση χρόνο, ολοκληρώθηκε το 1898. Ο κύριος σκελετός της εκκλησίας ήταν κατασκευασμένος από χάλυβα και καλυμμένος από μεταλλικές σανίδες. Όλα τα μεταλλικά κομμάτια ήταν στερεωμένα μεταξύ τους με παξιμάδια, μπουλόνια, πριτσίνια ή συγκολλήσεις. Το αρχιτεκτονικό της στυλ είναι εμπνευσμένο από τα νεογοτθικά και νεομπαρόκ κινήματα.
