La fontaine allemande fut construite par l'empereur allemand Guillaume II et offerte en cadeau au sultan Abdülhamid II . Elle fut inaugurée au début de l'année 1901 lors d'une cérémonie commémorative fastueuse.

Outre sa magnificence, la Fontaine allemande symbolisait également les liens étroits unissant les deux empires, liens qui allaient avoir des répercussions importantes sur l'histoire mondiale. Ces relations étroites entre l'Allemagne et l'Empire ottoman débutèrent au début du XXe siècle avec l'expansion de l'influence politique allemande vers l'est et perdurèrent jusqu'à l'alliance des deux nations lors de la Première Guerre mondiale.

Un Dôme Couvert De Magnifiques Mosaïques Dorées

Spitta , architecte en chef de Guillaume II , a conçu les plans de la fontaine, tandis que d'autres architectes, tels que Schoele , Carlitzik et Joseph Antony, ont également participé à sa construction. Son style reflète profondément l'influence de la néo-Renaissance allemande , tout en rappelant les fontaines ottomanes antérieures.

Sans aucun doute, l'aspect le plus intéressant et le plus magnifique de la fontaine est sa coupole. Ce dôme vert est formé d’un réseau d’arcs unis les uns aux autres reposant sur huit piliers. L'intérieur du dôme est orné de mosaïques peintes d'or.

La fontaine, de forme octogonale, repose sur une base haute. Des pierres colorées et des motifs géométriques ont été incorporés dans sa conception pour la décoration, tandis que sa base a été conçue comme une plate-forme. De plus, des bancs sculptés dans le marbre ont été placés sur les bords de la fontaine.

La fontaine allemande est située à l'endroit le plus majestueux de la place Sultanahmet. Non seulement la fontaine étanche la soif, mais son design incroyable provoque également la nostalgie des temps passés.
