St.-Irene-Kirche von Istanbul

Kaiser Konstantin der Große gab im Jahr 330 den Bau der St.-Irene-Kirche in Auftrag, die neben der Hagia Sophia zu den größten und ältesten byzantinischen Kirchen zählte.

St.-Irene-Kirche von Istanbul

Die Kirche ist nach einer Heiligen benannt, die sich damals für die Verbreitung des Christentums einsetzte. Eine Gruppe Heiden versuchte, die heilige Irene zu töten , indem sie sie zunächst in einen mit Schlangen gefüllten Brunnen warfen und sie später, während sie sie steinigten, über den Boden schleiften.

Doch trotz aller Bemühungen der Heiden überlebte Irene auf wundersame Weise. Angesichts dieser übernatürlichen Ereignisse konvertierte die Mehrheit der Heiden zum Christentum, und Irene wurde in den Augen des Volkes zur Heiligen. Kaiser Konstantin, der das Christentum als einzige Religion des Römischen Reiches einführte , benannte seine Kirche nach ihr.

Die Kirche wurde ursprünglich aus Holz erbaut, brannte aber während des Nike-Aufstands im Jahr 532 nieder . Obwohl Kaiser Justinian die St.-Irene-Kirche zusammen mit der Hagia Sophia wiederaufbauen ließ, wurde sie später durch Brände und Erdbeben erheblich beschädigt.

Glücklicherweise wurde die Kirche nach jeder Beschädigung renoviert und verblieb nach der Eroberung Konstantinopels innerhalb der Mauern des Topkapı-Palasthofs. Lange Zeit diente die St.-Irene-Kirche als Waffenlager; schließlich wurde sie 1869 in ein Museum umgewandelt.

Damit wurde sie zum ersten Museum des Osmanischen Reiches und diente lange Zeit als solches. Außerdem ist sie die einzige Kirche, die heute noch über ein Atrium verfügt (sie wird also von oben durch kleine Fenster beleuchtet).

Dieses ätherische Gebäude kann nur mit einer Sondergenehmigung besichtigt werden, die im Hagia Sofia Museum erhältlich ist. Aufgrund seiner außergewöhnlichen Akustik ist es oft Schauplatz verschiedener Konzerte und kultureller/künstlerischer Veranstaltungen.
