Other Means Of Transportation In Istanbul

Most Popular Options for Transportation in Istanbul

While planning your trip, transportation in Istanbul is an important factor to consider, especially when timing matters and city traffic tends to be heavy. When you are trying to figure out how to reach the city center from the airport, a taxi may sound like the best option. But what if you land during rush hour and traffic becomes a real problem? Do not worry; Istanbul offers plenty of alternatives.

Other Ways of Getting Around in Istanbul

Getting Around in Istanbul by Metro, Tram and Funicular

The most efficient and affordable way to get from A to B in Istanbul is undoubtedly by metro, tram, funicular and ferry. These forms of public transportation are generally quick and practical because they do not move through Istanbul’s constantly clogged streets. Here, the focus is on the lines most useful to visitors, along with key stops, operating hours and fares. For current network updates, it is always wise to check the official Metro Istanbul website.

Istanbul has 2 metro lines, 5 tramlines and 2 funiculars. Not every line is essential for travelers, and most tourists will probably only need some combination of the M1, M2, T1 and F1. Below are the most important stops and what they are useful for.

The Aksaray-Airport (Havalimani) Metro Line (M1)

If you choose this route while going to the city center from Istanbul Atatürk Airport, you will take the metro first. It is not a “real” metro line since it runs both below and above ground, which is why it is often referred to as the light metro or light tramway (Hafif Tramvay). Keep in mind that you need to transfer to the T1 in Aksaray (the final stop) to reach Sultanahmet Square, and transfer again from the T1 to the F1 in Kabataş to reach Taksim Square and Beyoğlu. The transfer in Aksaray also means carrying your suitcase up and down some stairs.

  • First train: 06:00
  • Last train: 24:00
  • Frequency: every 5 minutes; every 7.5 minutes on Sundays

The Yenikapı-Hacıosman Metro Line (M2)

This is the only real metro in Istanbul. It is a work in progress, with new stops being added regularly. Currently there are 15 stops. As a tourist, you will probably use this line to go north from Taksim for shopping. Get off at Osmanbey to reach Nişantaşı, at Şişli for the Cevahir and Profilo shopping centers, or at Levent to browse around Kanyon, Metrocity and Akmerkez. The last one requires a short taxi ride or a walk.

  • First train: 06:15; 06:30 on Sundays
  • Last train: 00:00
  • Frequency: every 4.5 minutes; every 7 minutes on Sundays

Transportation in Istanbul on the Zeytinburnu-Kabataş Tram Line (T1)

For tourists, this is undoubtedly the most interesting line of all, not least because it connects the historical part of Istanbul with the modern part by crossing the Golden Horn via the Galata Bridge area.

It includes stops such as Laleli Üniversitesi for Suleymaniye Mosque, Beyazıt and Çemberlitaş for the gates of the Grand Bazaar and a famous hamam, Sultanahmet for many major sights, Eminönü for the Spice Bazaar, New Mosque and Bosphorus cruise and Kadıköy ferry dock, Karaköy for a Tünel connection, Tophane for Istanbul Modern, and Kabataş for the F1 line to Taksim or sea transport to the Princes' Islands.

  • First train: 06:00
  • Last train: 23:50
  • Frequency: every 5 minutes

The Taksim-Kabataş Funicular (F1)

This funicular connects Taksim and Kabataş. Opened in 2006, it quickly became one of the simplest ways to avoid the steep hill between the waterfront and Taksim. The ride from Kabataş to Taksim takes only 150 seconds.

  • First train: 06:15; 06:30 on Sundays
  • Last train: 00:00
  • Frequency: every 5 minutes

Real-Life Example

So, how do you go from Sultanahmet to Taksim? Take the T1. In no more than 10 minutes, you will arrive at Kabataş. Transfer to the F1, and the whole trip should take no more than 15 minutes.

In other words, unless you are traveling with a group of more than three, the tram and funicular combination is usually both quicker and cheaper than taking a taxi.

Istanbul Kart

Istanbul Kart is an electronic card that you can top up and use on public transportation. It is economical and practical because, once you have it, you do not need to wait in line to buy tokens every time you travel. It is also cheaper than buying a token for 4 TRY each time you use a public transportation vehicle. Moreover, on public buses it is not possible to pay cash, so having a card is especially useful if you take a bus to an attraction or to your hotel.

You can purchase Istanbul Kart at some subway or bus stations, IETT ticket offices, or kiosks near the stations. You can top it up at subway and ferry stations and at some kiosks close to bus stops. Since fares and card policies may change, check the official IETT or transit websites before you travel.

Dolmuş or Shared Taxi in Istanbul

Dolmuş is the Turkish word for filled, stuffed or full, and it refers to the yellow shared taxis or minibuses that operate in Istanbul and elsewhere in Turkey. They are an easy, quick and convenient option for short rides to and from destinations just outside the city center.

What Is a Dolmuş?

A dolmuş is a shared taxi that seats a maximum of 8 passengers. These vehicles run day and night on predetermined routes, but without fixed stops. The idea is that each passenger pays only a fraction of what a normal Istanbul taxi would charge for the same destination. Because of this, the minibus normally sets off when all seats are taken.

How and Where Can You Take a Dolmuş?

You can either go to the dolmuş departure point for a certain route or flag one down on the street. It is usually easier to board at the point of origin, because on popular routes it can be difficult to find a shared taxi with available seats once it is already on the road.

Before getting in, make sure it is the correct one. The point of origin and final destination are displayed in the front window, usually on the passenger side. Once you are sure it is going in the right direction, just hop in and take a seat. No ticket or token is needed; you pay after it starts moving.

How and How Much Do You Pay for a Dolmuş?

There is no fixed price list here. Prices vary from route to route, and you may even bargain if you plan to get off before the final destination. To give a rough idea, rates vary between 2.5 to 5 TRY. As fares may be outdated, check locally before boarding. You can ask the driver, but often it is easiest to watch what other passengers are paying.

Make sure you have small notes, ideally no more than 5 or 10 TRY, or exact change. Payment starts after the dolmuş leaves its stand. If you cannot reach the driver, hand your money to the passenger in front of you. They will pass it along and return your change. You may also be asked to do the same for passengers seated behind you.

How and Where Can You Get Off the Dolmuş?

If you want to get off before the shared taxi reaches its final destination, just shout “inecek var”, meaning somebody wants to get out. The driver will stop at the first convenient place and may open the door beforehand. Naturally, wait until the minibus has come to a complete stop before getting out.

Sabiha Gokcen International Airport

Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, which is situated in the southeast of the city, is Istanbul's second airport. From this rather tiny airport, it is also fairly simple to get to the city center. In contrast to Istanbul Airport, this airport does not offer a metro alternative.
