About the Tourist Transportation Card

The tourist transportation card, called the Istanbul City Card, is a public transportation card designed for visitors to Istanbul. It is valid on public transportation vehicles including metro, trams, buses, metrobuses, and ferries. There is only one exception: minibuses in Istanbul still use cash, but there is no place you can get by minibus instead of a bus.

If you are visiting Istanbul, this card can be a practical option. Public transportation is one of the cheapest and often fastest ways to get around the city, whether you are heading to Sultanahmet Square, crossing the Bosphorus by ferry, or planning a day trip to the Princes' Islands. The card is a physical card delivered to your hotel by Istanbul Tourist Pass, and after your trip, you can keep it as a souvenir.

The Istanbul City Card comes in 6 different designs, each featuring a symbol of Istanbul. One design shows the famous cats of Istanbul, while others feature the Maiden Tower, Galata Tower, a cup of Turkish tea, a ferry, and the red tram of Istiklal Street. Cards are delivered randomly, so you may receive just one design during your visit.

You do not need to return the card after using it. Since it is a physical card, many travelers also keep it as a small reminder of their time in the city.

How the Tourist Transportation Card Works

Istanbul City Card is a prepaid public transportation card that gives unlimited access to public transportation for the number of days you choose. It is valid on metro, trams, buses, metrobuses, and ferries, making it useful for both first-time visitors and returning travelers.

This can be especially convenient if you are planning to visit major sights on different parts of the city, such as Hagia Sophia and Galata Tower, without worrying about topping up a local transit card during your stay.

Key Features of Istanbul City Card

  • Easy to use and valid on public transportation vehicles across Istanbul

  • Available only for tourists

  • Prepaid, so there is no need to top up

  • Unlimited access to public transportation for the number of days you choose

  • Anonymous, so no personalization is required

  • Can be bought online with delivery planning

  • Delivered to your hotel, helping you avoid lines

  • Can be bought together with Istanbul Tourist Pass; check the official site for current package details

Where You Can Use It

The card is intended for wide use across Istanbul's public transportation network. That includes ferries, which can be one of the most enjoyable ways to travel between neighborhoods while also seeing the city from the water. For route and system details, you can check official operators such as Metro Istanbul and Sehir Hatlari.

Because Istanbul is a large city spread across two continents, having one card that works on multiple transport types can make daily planning easier. It is especially helpful if your itinerary includes both historic areas and farther districts.

Why Many Visitors Prefer It

For tourists, the main advantage of the Istanbul City Card is simplicity. Instead of learning local top-up systems or buying separate tickets, you receive a ready-to-use physical card at your hotel. That means you can start using public transport to explore the city soon after arrival.

It also suits travelers who expect to move around a lot each day. If your plans include museums, ferry rides, viewpoints, and neighborhoods in different parts of Istanbul, unlimited rides for a selected number of days can be convenient.

Things to Know Before You Buy

The card described here is presented as a tourist-focused transportation product. Since transport services and sales conditions can change over time, it is a good idea to confirm the latest delivery, validity, and package information on the official seller's website before purchasing.

Also remember that minibuses are not included, as they still use cash. In practice, however, buses and other public transportation options cover the routes most visitors need.
