By Coach Bus

Coach bus travel is a major part of getting around Turkey and reaching Istanbul. People might think choosing buses means choosing to suffer, but in countries where bus networks are well developed, it can be one of the best options. In Turkey, buses are the primary means of transportation because the railway system is not widespread, and more than 100 million people use intercity buses annually, making the country one of Europe’s major intercity bus markets.

The network is served by more than 400 bus companies, from small operators with only a few vehicles to very large companies with over 1,000 buses. Alongside scheduled services, private companies also provide charter buses and tourism-related transport.

Coach Bus Travel in Turkey

All Turkish cities are connected by intercity buses. There is a daily intercity bus to Istanbul from almost every city with more than 5,000 residents, and there are many daily departures between larger cities.

One distinctive feature of intercity travel in Turkey is that there is often a steward or stewardess on board. Some companies tried removing this service to reduce costs, but quickly brought it back.

On shorter routes, buses for about 30 passengers are typically used. In many cases, the seating layout is 1+2, meaning one side has two seats and the other side has one. This helps provide more privacy and can allow single female travelers to sit alone. On busier routes, double or large single-decker buses are frequently used.

Turkey also has an international bus network serving Bosnia, Bulgaria, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Albania. There are daily departures to nearby countries from Istanbul, while routes to more distant destinations may run biweekly or weekly.

Bus Tickets and Passes

Ticket sales are another distinctive part of Turkey’s intercity bus sector. Unlike in some European countries, there is usually no single central ticket office at the station. Instead, each bus company using the terminal tends to have its own sales counter.

Buying tickets online has become increasingly common, especially since the Coronavirus period expanded the market for internet ticketing. When purchasing online, you usually choose both your seat and your gender.

Online tickets are often issued like coupons. At the terminal, you may be able to print the ticket at the company counter, but this is not always necessary. In many cases, you can board by simply showing the QR code to the driver.

Popular Bus Lines Throughout the Country

Some routes in Turkey have numerous departures every day. Among the better-known intercity lines are:

  • Ankara-Istanbul
  • Izmir-to-Istanbul
  • Istanbul-Bursa
  • Eskisehir-Istanbul
  • Antalya-to-Istanbul

If you are arriving in the city by road, these routes can bring you close to major sightseeing areas such as Sultanahmet Square and lively central districts around Taksim Square, depending on where your onward transport begins.

International Bus Routes

As mentioned above, Turkey has international coach and bus links with a number of Balkan countries. Some of the routes most frequently used for travel to nearby countries include:

  • Turkey-Sofia
  • Istanbul-Plovdiv
  • Turkey-Greece
  • Turkey-Varna
  • Turkey-Greece
  • Turkey-Xanthi
  • Istanbul-Alexandra
  • Turkey-Bosnia

Istanbul Buses and Terminals

In Turkey, there are intercity, city, regional, and charter bus companies. Every city with a population of at least 50,000 has a city or regional bus company, and around 400 companies run scheduled routes across the country.

Turkey’s large number of bus passengers requires equally large terminals. One of the three biggest bus stations in Europe is located in Greater Istanbul. Because Istanbul is such a large city, there are several bus stations, so it is important to confirm the exact departure point of your bus. If you book online, departure details should normally be available there as well.

For local public transport information once you arrive, the official Istanbul bus operator IETT can help with routes and city bus services.

As a major tourist destination, Turkey also has many buses available for tours, airport transfers, and private rentals. In destinations such as Alanya, Belek, and Side, as well as in larger cities, buses can be chartered for tourist groups. These rentals are available through transport companies and online, and hotels can often help arrange them.

Charter buses are generally modern and in good condition, although older buses may still be used on especially busy days.

Useful Tips for Travelers

  • There is often a steward or stewardess on board intercity buses to assist passengers.
  • Never place valuable items or important documents in the luggage hold.
  • Buses with beds are not typical in Turkey; overnight services generally use comfortable reclining seats instead.
  • Most airports in Turkey offer shuttle buses and public buses, and larger airports may also have metro connections.
  • For families traveling together, a private transfer can sometimes be economical.
  • Buses run frequently between Turkey and Greece, with Istanbul serving as the main hub.
  • There are also daily buses from Turkey to Sofia, Burgas, Varna, Plovdiv, and other destinations in Bulgaria, with most departures starting from Istanbul.

Once you are in the city, buses can connect you with ferry piers, metro lines, and major attractions. Depending on your plans, you may continue toward the Grand Bazaar or even pair your stay with a Bosphorus Cruise.

Health and Travel Updates

Domestic travel rules in Turkey changed during the Corona pandemic, and requirements such as wearing a face mask on buses, trains, and planes were introduced at various times. As these rules may change, it is best to check current guidance from official Turkish sources and also review your home country’s travel rules and your travel insurance coverage before departure.

20 Spring Photography Spots in Istanbul (2026)

I shoot Istanbul for a living, and spring is the season I clear my calendar for. The light in April is clean and low, the erguvan (ehr-goo-VAHN, judas tree) throws purple across the hillsides, the tulips are in bloom, and the haze that flattens the summer skyline has not yet settled in. For about six
