Istanbul train stations worth knowing

Istanbul train stations reflect the city’s long transport history across both Europe and Asia. Some are famous for their architecture, some for their role in daily commuting, and some for their place in the story of rail travel in the city. Below, you can discover several notable stations in Istanbul, including Haydarpasa, Sirkeci, Bostanci, Halkali, Florya, Kazlicesme, and Yenikapi.

Haydarpasa Train Station

One of the best-known landmarks of Kadıköy is Haydarpasa Train Station, recognized for its magnificent building and remarkable history. The station witnessed many important moments in the past and continued to stand as a symbolic point for travelers for generations. Haydarpasa served as a stop for millions of travelers throughout its history.

Haydarpasa Train Station was designed and built by two German architects, and it opened for service on 19 May 1908. With the rise of road transportation and air travel, the station lost some of its former importance compared with earlier decades, yet it remains one of the landmarks of Kadıköy on the Asian side of Istanbul.

The station is not operating anymore due to the renovation of railroad tracks. There has also been discussion of converting Haydarpasa into a hotel or another venue. Even so, the building still holds an important place in the city’s identity, especially for visitors exploring the Asian shore.

Sirkeci Train Station

Sirkeci Train Station is one of the most beautiful train stations in Istanbul. It is located on the European side of the city in Eminönü, close to Topkapi Palace and Gulhane Park. One of its most important features is that it was the first train station on the European side of Istanbul.

For decades, Sirkeci Train Station was the first stop for many visitors arriving in Istanbul. The station building still remains close to its original state and was conceived by the German architect August Jasmund. Sirkeci is a striking example of Oriental-Gothic aesthetics.

The terminal building was built by Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamit II, and it opened with a glorious ceremony in 1890 to create a link between the Ottoman Empire and the rest of the world. Although the station is no longer in use in the same way because of the construction of the new underground Sirkeci station for the Marmaray line, the historic building still preserves its breathtaking appearance.

There is also a free museum dedicated to Turkish rail transport from another age. This small but attractive railway museum offers visitors an invaluable experience, with documents and objects representing the history of train transportation. If you are already visiting nearby sights such as Hagia Sophia or wandering around the historic peninsula, Sirkeci is an easy stop to add to your route.

Bostanci Train Station

Bostanci is one of the most important transportation points in Istanbul. It is about 200 meters from the sea and is located on the Asian side of the city in Kadıköy. One of the biggest advantages of Bostanci Train Station is that it stands in a commercial area, which allows visitors to reach other means of public transportation in a short time.

Bostancı Station was originally built by the Ottoman Empire as a part of the railway from Kadıköy to Izmit. It opened on 22 September 1872. Its location has long made it practical for local connections as well as everyday urban travel.

Halkali Train Station

Halkalı Train Station is the westernmost station on the Marmaray line and also in Istanbul. The station serves not only regional trains including Edirne, Uzunköprü, and Çerkezköy, but also international trains to Bucharest, Belgrade, and Sofia.

Halkalı Train Station opened on 22 July 1872. Because of its position, it has long held importance as one of the city’s rail gateways toward both regional and international routes.

If you want current Marmaray and urban rail information, it is best to check the official operator at Metro Istanbul.

Florya Train Station

Florya Train Station is a railway station in Bakırköy, Istanbul. The station was built in 1955. One of its distinguishing features is that it allows users to reach one of the most popular beaches in Istanbul, Florya Beach.

Florya Train Station is one of the stops on Marmaray, which runs from Halkalı station to the Gebze district of Kocaeli. This makes it especially convenient for passengers combining urban transport with a coastal outing.

Kazlicesme Train Station

Kazlıcesme railway station is located in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul. It was opened on 4 December 1955 by the Turkish State Railways. Although brief in description, the station has been part of the city’s broader suburban rail network and transport development.

Yenikapi Train Station

Yenikapi railway station is one of the most crowded transfer points in Istanbul in terms of transportation. It is located in Yenikapı, as its name suggests. The station was built by the Oriental Railway, which was taken over by the Turkish State Railways in 1937.

Because of the rehabilitation of the Marmaray line, Yenikapi was indefinitely closed on 19 March 2013. Then, on 29 October 2013, the new underground Yenikapi railway station opened together with the Marmaray tunnel.

Its role today is especially important for connections across the city, linking major transport flows between different districts and sides of Istanbul.

Why these Istanbul train stations matter

Together, these Istanbul train stations show how the city grew through rail travel, from Ottoman-era lines to modern Marmaray connections. Some, such as Haydarpasa and Sirkeci, are especially valued for their architecture and historical meaning. Others, such as Bostanci, Halkali, Florya, Kazlicesme, and Yenikapi, are more closely tied to everyday mobility and the city’s transport network.

If you are planning a route through the historic center, stations like Sirkeci can fit naturally with visits to landmarks such as the Grand Bazaar. On the Asian side, Haydarpasa and Bostanci offer another perspective on Istanbul’s long relationship with travel, trade, and urban life.
