One Week in Istanbul

Here we go.

Day One: Sultanahmet Highlights

You have got your passport stamped and now you are officially in Istanbul, welcome.

Take one of the comfortable airport buses and head toward your hotel. If you do not know which bus to take, you can ask one of the organizers at the parking area, or simply take a taxi. For current public transport information, check the official IETT website.

After checking in and leaving your bags, start your first outing in Sultanahmet Square.

Good things come first. Enter Hagia Sophia to witness the ancient architecture of this extraordinary monument, which was once the largest cathedral in the world during the Byzantine period. It will not take long to walk through, admire the interior, and take some photos.

Then continue to Topkapi Palace, right next to Hagia Sophia. This palace takes you back around four hundred years to the Ottoman Empire, when it was used for residence, administration, and educational programs. Its design and architecture are still impressive today.

Before finishing your first day, visit the ancient Basilica Cistern and step back into Byzantine history. This cistern served as a major water source in Istanbul for centuries, and its atmospheric architecture is breathtaking.

After sunset, end your first day at one of the restaurants around Sultanahmet Square and enjoy a delicious dinner with your partner.

Day Two: Grand Bazaar and Eminonu

Wake up early, have breakfast at the hotel, and head toward the Grand Bazaar to see one of the world’s largest and oldest covered markets. It served as Istanbul’s main market for centuries and is known for its thousands of shops. You will find an enormous variety of products there, and even if you are not a shopping lover, you should at least buy a box of traditional Turkish baklava.

After your walk through the bazaar, take the T1 Tramway line toward Eminonu. Near the station you will find a lively square by the sea and many vendors selling grilled fish sandwiches. Buy one from a vendor and enjoy a classic local bite.

You can also visit the Spice Bazaar, located across the street under the New Mosque, to get a feel for the trading spirit that shaped the city during the Ottoman period.

Day Three: Bosphorus and Dolmabahce

It is time to visit the Bosphorus. Head to Ortakoy Square and begin at the food street, where you can try the famous Turkish kumpir. If you do not feel like having that, sit down for a traditional Turkish breakfast at one of the restaurants in the area.

Afterward, buy a ticket for one of the Bosphorus Cruise tours. A short trip on the water is a wonderful way to see the historical palaces and modern villas lining both sides of the strait. Keep your camera ready, especially if you are visiting in April or May.

When you return, continue to Dolmabahce Palace, where many sultans once lived. Walk through the halls and gardens of one of the most luxurious palaces in the city. For official visitor information, it is best to check Milli Saraylar.

Day Four: Istiklal Street and Galata

Head toward Istiklal Street for a long walk that you will likely enjoy from beginning to end. Street musicians are often part of the atmosphere and are fun to watch. You can buy ice cream from one of the vendors, or if it is winter, choose a bag of roasted chestnuts for something warm and delicious.

At the end of the street, you will reach Galata Tower. Go up to the top for a beautiful 360-degree view of Istanbul and take in the city from above.

Day Five: Kadikoy on the Asian Side

Spend some time in Kadikoy on the Asian side of Istanbul. The district has many beautiful streets, cafes, and bars, and it offers a different rhythm from the historical center.

As a suggestion, have a delicious lunch at one of the local restaurants. If you enjoy grilled meat, this is a good place to order it. Then return to the European side by ferry and enjoy the ride back across the water.

Day Six: Shopping Day

It is a good idea to spend this day shopping at one of Istanbul’s malls or traditional markets. You can choose places such as Mall of Istanbul, Zorlu Center, Cevahir Mall, the Grand Bazaar, or the Spice Bazaar depending on what kind of shopping experience you want.

After shopping, make sure to try some traditional Turkish desserts such as baklava, kunefe, or lokum.

Day Seven: Departure

It is time to check out from the hotel and head toward the airport. It is important to leave early because the airport can be far from the city center, and the trip may take around an hour depending on traffic and your location.

Take your last picture together at the airport to keep as a memory, and have a safe flight home.

Thank you for your visit. We are waiting for you again.

FAQ: One Week in Istanbul

Is one week in Istanbul enough?

Yes, one week is enough to see many of Istanbul’s major highlights at a comfortable pace. You can cover the historic peninsula, a Bosphorus experience, lively neighborhoods like Kadikoy and Istiklal, and still leave some time for shopping and local food.

Which area is best to stay in for a 7-day Istanbul trip?

Sultanahmet works well if you want to be close to major historical sights such as Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern. If you prefer a more modern and lively atmosphere, areas near Istiklal Street can also be a convenient base.

How do I get around Istanbul during the week?

You can combine trams, ferries, buses, and taxis depending on your route. The T1 tram is especially useful for major historical areas, while ferries are a scenic way to travel between the European and Asian sides of the city.

What should I prioritize on a first trip to Istanbul?

For a first visit, prioritize Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar, a Bosphorus cruise, Dolmabahce Palace, Istiklal Street, Galata Tower, and a ferry ride to or from Kadikoy. These places give you a balanced introduction to the city’s history and daily life.
