Nightlife in Istanbul: District by District

Taksim: nightlife in Istanbul district by district starts here

Taksim might be the most well-known district in Istanbul. You can find almost anything you want to do here: watch a film in a nostalgic theater, head toward Galata Tower and look out over the city, wander between lively streets, dance until morning, have a sophisticated meal, visit an art gallery, or join a workshop.

If we focus specifically on nightlife, Taksim is a whirlwind of colors. It is not wrong to say that the options, depending on food type, music style, and price range, can feel overwhelming. You can find many kinds of entertainment, from gay clubs to Türkü bars, from electro clubs to meyhanes. The night starts early in Taksim, but it also ends very late. Before going home, many people finish the night with a bowl of işkembe çorbası (tripe soup), a familiar ritual after a long night out.

If you are planning a night around the city center, being near Taksim Square also makes moving around easier.

Kadıköy

Kadıköy, on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, has become increasingly popular in recent years. Even though it is sometimes considered the Taksim of Asia, it offers a different atmosphere. The evening often begins with a ferry ride and a magnificent view of Haydarpaşa Train Station, then continues on bar-lined streets with antique wooden mansions that now house trendy bars, restaurants, and cafes.

Compared with Taksim, Kadıköy is cleaner, cozier, and quieter. One thing to keep in mind is that most bars close after 1 am, unlike Taksim. Just a few minutes’ walk from the ferry, you can also find traditional Turkish taverns serving seafood and Turkish raki. You can pick one of Kadıköy’s distinctive bars such as Buddha, Karga, Arka Oda, Hera, or Trip, choose a tavern for raki and meze, or simply buy a beer from a market and sit by the seashore watching ferries go by.

Karaköy

It would not be wrong to say that Karaköy has recently become one of the most popular and fastest-changing districts in Istanbul. If one of these districts deserves to be called “hipster,” it is definitely Karaköy. Almost every day, a new bar, restaurant, or club seems to open.

Not only are the nightlife venues new here, but many former smithies, fabric shops, and ateliers have also turned into art galleries, vintage stores, and designer shops. Most bars serve sophisticated food until around 10 pm, then turn into dance floors with good music afterward. Sometimes the crowd spills into the street. There are also places that function mainly as nightclubs, such as Gaspar and Fosil.

Karaköy is more expensive than the other districts on this list, with one exception: Ortaköy. The meyhanes by the shore are also very popular for eating meze or seafood and drinking raki. Try to explore Karaköy with an open mind—it may already have changed again by the time you get there. Since Karaköy sits close to the waterfront, it also pairs well with a daytime Bosphorus Cruise before a night out.

Ortaköy

Ortaköy’s nightlife is more homogeneous than that of the other districts. It is a long coastline filled with fancy, luxurious, and beautiful nightclubs. Almost all of them come with a breathtaking Bosphorus Bridge view, with one leg in Asia and one leg in Europe.

Some clubs in Ortaköy, for example Reina, became so significant and touristic that world-known celebrities, government officers, and presidents have dined and enjoyed nights there. It is surely a privilege to enjoy your drink and dance while watching the Istanbul skyline, its historic buildings, and the Marmara Sea.

If you go to the center of Ortaköy, right next to the shore and Ortakoy Mosque, you can also find less expensive bars and clubs. Or you can simply sit by the shore with a drink from a market and watch the sea and the passing boats.

Beşiktaş

The first thing you notice in Beşiktaş is its authentic Turkish neighborhood atmosphere. It is an area that has not felt the touch of gentrification so much, at least not yet. In the daytime, you will see people shopping in arcades, young people practicing on skateboards during warm summer afternoons, and locals of all ages drinking tea from street tea sellers.

At night, the streets around the fish market become crowded, joyful, and drunk. The streets closest to the fish market are surrounded by taverns serving seafood and raki. Other places are mostly popular with younger crowds. Prices are average rather than expensive.

The main exception in Beşiktaş is the venues on Akaretler Street. There, you can find fancy and luxurious bars, lounges, and clubs. When the weather is nice, many people also prefer to sit by the seashore and enjoy their drinks, whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

Bağdat Avenue

Bağdat Street is one of the most famous streets on the Anatolian side, sometimes overshadowing Kadıköy’s bar street. It is better known for shopping than for nightlife, but in addition to being a shopping center, it also has one of Istanbul’s bar streets.

There are bars and clubs here that are a little more expensive than average. It is also the kind of place where you may see very expensive and unusual cars passing by. The street is 9 miles long, runs parallel to the Sea of Marmara, and is popular with young people who come to shop, sip coffee, and drink cocktails.

Bonus: Caddebostan Coastline

All you really need here is a sheet to sit on, plus food and drinks. You can lie on the grass, smell the sea, and enjoy long conversations with friends. The grass is somewhat clean, and you will be surrounded by people having fun, with an atmosphere that can feel like an open-air festival in the middle of the city.

Tips for choosing where to go out

  • Choose Taksim if you want the widest variety and the latest ending hours.
  • Choose Kadıköy if you prefer a cozier, calmer night with bars, taverns, and waterfront views.
  • Choose Karaköy if you want trendy places, design-driven spaces, and a more rapidly changing scene.
  • Choose Ortaköy if the Bosphorus view matters as much as the venue.
  • Choose Beşiktaş if you want a more local neighborhood feeling with average prices.
  • Choose Bağdat Avenue if you want nightlife mixed with shopping and a polished city atmosphere.

Driving In Istanbul

Driving in Turkey is done on the right hand side in line with most of Europe and the Americas. Multi-laned highways run throughout the city, though Istanbul‘s backstreets tend to be a maze of narrow, one-way streets and due to the rapidly expanding nature of it, street names tend to change quickly.
