What to See at Istanbul Postal Museum

The museum presents the story of postal and telegraph services through preserved equipment, period displays, and historical artifacts.

Mail Section

There are numerous mannequins in this part, dressed in the various outfits worn by mail carriers and military couriers over the course of the nation’s history, from the Ottoman Constitutional period to the early years of the Republic of Turkey and into the present. You will also see historical postal service relics such as franking machines, locator maps, mail satchels, pouches, and bags.

Telegraph Section

The display of the first telegraph office from 1855 is the highlight of the telegraph section. A telegraph was sent from the Bulgarian city of Shumen, then part of the Ottoman Empire, to Istanbul on September 9, 1855, during the Crimean War. The telegram, “The Allied troops reached Sevastopol,” announced the triumph of the Allied forces in the Siege of Sevastopol.

An additional significant part of this area is the telegraphy room of Hamdi Bey. During the takeover of Istanbul by the Allied forces, he sent telegraphs in Morse alphabet to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk about the situation in Istanbul. He was later taken prisoner by hostile troops, but the historical apparatus from the original telegraphy room has been preserved and is now displayed here.

The PTT Museum is situated near the Sirkeci Marmaray station in Istanbul’s Fatih district. You can reach the museum directly by taking the Kabatas-Bagcilar tram line and getting off at the Sirkeci stop. From there, it is about a 3-minute walk.

The metro is another option. You can first reach Yenikapi via the M1A Yenikapi–Ataturk Airport, M1B Yenikapi–Kirazli, or M2 Yenikapi–Haciosman lines, then continue to Sirkeci on Marmaray. From the Asian side, Marmaray is usually the fastest and easiest route.

If you would rather enjoy views of the Bosphorus on the way, you can also take a ferry to Eminonu from Kadikoy or Uskudar. From Eminonu, the museum is around a 5-minute walk away. For current public transport details, it is helpful to check the official Metro Istanbul website before your visit.

Visiting the Istanbul Postal Museum

The operating hours of the Istanbul Postal Museum are Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, excluding federal and religious holidays. Admission is entirely free, which makes it an easy cultural stop if you are already sightseeing around Eminonu and Sirkeci. As schedules may change, it is wise to confirm current details on an official source before going.

Nearby Attractions Around the Museum

Because the museum is in Fatih, there are many major attractions nearby, making it easy to combine with a half-day or full-day itinerary.

Hagia Sophia is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks and a natural next stop if you want to continue into the city’s Byzantine and Ottoman heritage.

Topkapi Palace, one of the most significant structures of the Ottoman Empire, is also close to the museum. It hosted Ottoman sultans and other notable figures for centuries and is now known for its remarkable collections and architecture.

If you want to continue walking through the historic center, Grand Bazaar is another classic stop within reach, especially if you want to combine museums with shopping and atmosphere.

Why Visit the Istanbul Postal Museum?

The Istanbul Postal Museum stands out because it focuses on a specific but important part of daily and political history: how messages, documents, and news moved across the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. The collections are especially interesting if you enjoy communication history, vintage technology, or lesser-known museums in central Istanbul.

It also works well as a short visit between larger landmarks. Since it is centrally located and free to enter, it is a practical choice for travelers who want to discover something different without straying far from the main sightseeing area.
