Istanbul’s Bazaars

When you come to Istanbul, there are many shopping malls you can visit. However, if you want to get to know the city better, meet local people, and see a wide range of products for less, you should spend time in the districts and historical bazaars. Istanbul bazaars are set up in different neighborhoods on different days, and some are much more famous than others. People who want to explore Istanbul often leave themselves to these lively stalls stretching along the streets. Everything you are looking for can appear side by side, often at more affordable prices.

Istanbul’s Bazaars

Below are some of the best-known bazaars you can visit in Istanbul and what makes each one special.

Famous Istanbul Bazaars to Explore

Spice Bazaar - Eminönü

The Spice Bazaar is one of the oldest covered bazaars in the city. You can find spices, gold and silver jewelry, and herbal teas here. It is located behind the New Mosque (Yeni Cami) in Eminönü and attracts attention with its colorful spice stalls. The entrance is free, and it can be visited between 9 am and 9 pm.

Grand Bazaar - Beyazıt

The Grand Bazaar is a large covered market made up of interconnecting streets and passages where a great variety of products are sold. It is known to have more than four thousand shops and is the oldest and largest Istanbul bazaar. Carpets, antiques, gems and jewelry, handmade goods, clothing, and more can be found here.

Its gates open toward different parts of the historic peninsula, including Beyazıt, Sultanahmet, and Eminönü. Once inside, you may feel as if you are walking through a labyrinth. Different products are sold on different streets, so if you are shopping for jewelry, for example, it makes sense to head toward the passages where the jewelers are gathered.

Sultanahmet Arasta Bazaar

Sultanahmet Arasta Bazaar is located behind the Blue Mosque. Its historical name is known as Sipahiler Bazaar. It also contains the Great Palace Mosaics Museum. After a major fire, most of the shops were destroyed, but today the bazaar is again home to various souvenirs, tile products, and mosaics.

While visiting this bazaar, do not forget to see the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia nearby as well.

Istanbul’s Bazaars

Beyazıt Historical Coppersmiths' Bazaar

This bazaar consists of coppersmiths lined up on the street next to Istanbul University. It is one of the places where you can still look for handmade products and see copper work among the goods on display.

Bookstores Bazaar - Beyazıt

The Bookstores Bazaar is one of the most mysterious among the Istanbul bazaars. It is a place where every corner seems to smell of books. There is an entrance from the university side and from Beyazıt Square. The area includes street booksellers, a historical fountain, and many bookshops.

You can find both new and old books here. Sometimes, a second-hand book may even hold historical letters or other unexpected traces of the past.

Beyoğlu Fish Market

Located beside Çiçek Pasajı in Taksim, Beyoğlu Fish Market is a lively place where you can buy different food products. There are vegetable, fruit, and seafood stalls, and you can also try street delicacies such as fried mussels and stuffed mussels.

Istanbul Society Bazaars

Alongside the historic covered markets, weekly neighborhood and society bazaars are also an important part of everyday shopping in Istanbul. These markets are known for variety, affordable prices, and local atmosphere.

  • Bakırköy Bazaar - Open every Saturday.
  • Erenköy Bazaar - Open on Thursday.
  • Ortaköy (Ulus) Bazaar - Thursday and Sunday.
  • Kadıköy Historical Tuesday Bazaar - Open on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • Beşiktaş High Street Bazaar - Open on Saturday.

Istanbul’s Bazaars

  • Beykoz Sosyete Çarşısı (Çubuklu) - Open every day of the week.
  • Bahçeşehir Pazartürk Bazaar - Open on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
  • Yeşilköy Bazaar - Open on Wednesday.
  • Feriköy Antique and Flea Bazaar - Set up on Sunday. It is possible to find records, cassettes, glasses, and antique products in this market, both original and second-hand. It is a market where there is no food.

Why Visit Istanbul Bazaars?

Istanbul bazaars generally meet almost every need. To find the product you want at a cheaper price and with better quality, it is often worth walking through the whole bazaar and comparing what different sellers offer. In almost every neighborhood of Istanbul, weekly bazaars are established, so it is easy to come across one even while wandering through an area at random.

We suggest starting with the historical bazaars and then exploring the neighborhood markets as time allows. Each bazaar stands out for its unique features: some are famous for spices, some for fabrics, some for antiques, and some for clothing. Part of their charm is also in their energy, with sellers calling out in lively rhythms adapted to the products they sell.

If you want a broader historical overview of the city, UNESCO's page on the Historic Areas of Istanbul offers useful context for the old commercial districts. For background on the Grand Bazaar itself, you can also check Wikipedia.

We wish you a pleasant trip and enjoyable shopping in Istanbul.
