Mosques in Istanbul

Istanbul is a famous and highly touristic city in Turkey, celebrated for its historic buildings and landmarks. Among them, mosque culture and the city’s major mosques are especially interesting for visitors who want to understand Istanbul beyond its skyline.

According to research made in 2007, there were 2,944 mosques in Istanbul. Many of them serve primarily as neighborhood places of worship, while others are also historical and touristic landmarks. Because of that, visiting an Istanbul mosque is one of the main goals for many travelers.

For visitors who want to see these historical and touristic mosques, it is important to respect local cultural norms. Since these are active places of religious devotion, etiquette matters. When someone is praying, it is impolite to walk in front of them. You can photograph interiors and details, but do not use flash, and ask permission before photographing people. Taking photos of someone while they are praying is not a good idea.

Dress modestly when entering. Men should wear shorts below the knees, a t-shirt, and remove caps. Women should cover the head, chest, legs, and shoulders. If needed, you can borrow a headscarf and a shawl to cover your hair and legs.

Historical Mosques

Mosques

There are many historical mosques in Istanbul, and they are a major reason why so many travelers come to the city. Below is a concise list of important mosques and what makes each one memorable.

Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque, perhaps Istanbul’s most renowned mosque, is a very popular tourist destination thanks to its remarkable bright-blue tile work. This towering 17th-century structure, the last great mosque of the classical Ottoman period, is best viewed from Sultanahmet Square, where its six unique minarets emphasize its presence above the trees.

Süleymaniye Mosque

This mosque may not be the largest in Istanbul, but it is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent. This exquisite piece of 16th-century architecture dominates the summit above the Golden Horn, on the city’s ancient peninsula, and is only a 10-minute walk from the Grand Bazaar. It is a significant structure built by Mimar Sinan, the Ottoman Empire’s most skilled architect, for the empire’s most famous sultan, generally known as Suleiman the Magnificent.

Hagia Sophia Mosque

It was the largest cathedral of its time, having been erected as a Greek Patriarchal Cathedral, until the Ottoman assault seized the Byzantine Empire’s capital. Istanbul then became the main city of the Muslim Ottoman Empire. This location was turned into a museum in 1935 during the Republic period. In 2020, it was controversially transformed back into a mosque. This indicates that entry is unrestricted. For historical background, see UNESCO.

Rüstem Paşa Mosque

This tiny but magnificent mosque, designed by the renowned architect Sinan, gives the Blue Mosque a run for its money in artistic ceramics. Access stairs may be found on Hasırcılar Caddesi or along a small roadway running north from Hasırcılar Caddesi toward the Golden Horn.

Ortakoy Mosque

Despite its less radical form, Ortakoy Mosque is one of Istanbul’s most magnificent monuments and is regarded as the Jewel of the Bosphorus because of its spectacular waterside setting.

Mihrimah Sultan Mosque

New Mosque (Yeni Cami)

The New Mosque, located at the end of Istanbul’s iconic Galata Bridge, was planned by Sinan’s pupil, Davut Ağa, and took more than half a century to complete because of financial challenges and political turbulence. It was the last of the imperial mosques to be constructed, and it was inspired by both the Blue Mosque and the Süleymaniye Mosque. For further architectural context, see Britannica.

Things to Do in Istanbul Beyond Mosques

When traveling in Istanbul, you will find far more than monumental religious architecture. Day cruises, bus tours, historic sites, walking tours, cultural tours, shopping areas, private sightseeing tours, dinner cruises, parks, lunch cruises, and museums all add variety to a trip. Even so, visiting historical, cultural, and touristic mosques remains one of the most famous things to do in the city.

If you are building an itinerary, mosque visits pair naturally with nearby landmarks such as Topkapi Palace, the bazaars, and the old imperial center. That combination offers one of the clearest introductions to Istanbul’s layered history.
