Belgrad Forest

Belgrad Forest is one of the best places to enjoy nature in such a massive and crowded city. If you wonder why there is a “Belgrade” named forest in Istanbul, the name comes from the people of Belgrade, whom Suleiman the Magnificent settled in the village around this forest after his Serbian expedition in 1521.

Belgrad Forest

Belgrad Forest, or Belgrad Ormanı in Turkish, can be very crowded in summer and on weekends. Still, it is especially peaceful and enjoyable between 7 AM and 9 AM. At that time, you can bring a simple breakfast, start the day with a walk among the greenery, and then sit down for a quiet meal. Autumn may be the best season to visit, when the crowds are lighter and the forest is covered with yellow and orange tones.

Belgrad Forest nature and species diversity

Belgrad Forest is an area that receives heavy rainfall although it is not very high above sea level. It has transitional features between Central European and Mediterranean climates. This natural structure allows different plant species to grow together in the same area. The vegetation generally consists of deciduous trees and shrubs, and the sessile oak is the dominant tree species in the forest.

Belgrad Forest is also important for wildlife in Istanbul and its surroundings. It is a natural habitat for many birds, reptiles, and mammals. Thanks to protection measures and hunting bans, endangered species can find opportunities to breed here.

Walking and running in Belgrad Forest

For many visitors, the main reason to come is simple: fresh air, greenery, and long walks. This makes Belgrad Forest a welcome contrast to Istanbul’s busy historic center, where many travelers also visit places such as Galata Tower or take a Bosphorus Cruise. Here, the pace is slower and the atmosphere is much calmer.

Neşet Suyu Parkour

When you enter from the main gate on the Bahçeköy side, the road splits into two. If you continue from right to left, you reach the Neşet Suyu Parkour. If you enjoy running, this track is worth trying. Toward the end of the route, you arrive at a pond. There is also a buffet at the beginning of the track if you want water or a snack. It is a great place for morning jogs and relaxed walks alike.

Horse safari and ATV tour

If you want to explore the forest in a different way, some companies offer trips on horseback. There are also ATV safari tours for visitors who prefer a more active ride through nature. These options can add variety to a day in Belgrad Forest, especially if you have already done the walking trails before.

Atatürk Arboretum near Belgrad Forest

When visiting Belgrad Forest, do not leave without seeing Atatürk Arboretum, known for its countless tree species. It offers a living open-air exhibition created by experts in forestry and botany. For many nature lovers, it is one of the most rewarding stops in the area.

If you are planning a wider Istanbul itinerary, you can pair a quiet day here with urban sightseeing in places like Taksim Square or waterfront visits around Golden Horn.

Where is Belgrad Forest?

Belgrad Forest is located on the European side of Istanbul, in the northern part of the city’s settled area, within the Sarıyer and Eyüpsultan districts. It takes about 45 minutes from Taksim when there is no traffic.

For transport planning in Istanbul, it is useful to check official public transportation resources such as IETT and Metro Istanbul.

How big is Belgrad Forest?
