About Pierre Loti

Pierre Loti

Pierre Loti is one of the best places to visit in Istanbul. Located in Eyüp, one of the most eye-catching districts of the city, this hill is named after the French writer Julien Viaud. He settled in Istanbul in 1876 and used to come to a coffee house here to write his novels. Later, he changed his name, and the hill began to be called after him.

This place fascinates visitors with its romantic and unique atmosphere. Beyond the scenery, there are restaurants where you can enjoy a meal, then have coffee or hookah while watching the view. Pierre Loti remains one of the most captivating tourist attractions in Istanbul, especially for those who want to admire the Golden Horn and explore historical surroundings.

Who Is Pierre Loti?

Louis Marie Julien Viaud, also known as Pierre Loti, was born in Rochefort, France. He was a naval officer and a well-known writer. During his time in Istanbul, he lived in Eyüp and often described himself as a Turcophile.

Pierre Loti visited Istanbul many times. He first came in 1876 as a commissioned officer on a French ship. Deeply influenced by Ottoman life, he reflected that interest in many of his works. In Istanbul, he met the woman who gave her name to his novel Aziyadé. He wrote Aziyadé in a coffee house known as Rabia Kadın Kahvesi in Pierre Loti.

For more background on the writer himself, you can also consult Wikipedia's overview of Pierre Loti.

History of Pierre Loti

Pierre Loti defended the Turks against Europe during the Balkan Wars, the First World War, and the later invasion of Anatolia. He won the sympathy of the Turkish people by supporting the resistance in Anatolia during the National Struggle and by harshly criticizing his own country.

On October 4, 1921, the Turkish Grand National Assembly sent a letter to Pierre Loti expressing gratitude. In addition, he was accepted as an Honorary Citizen of the City of Istanbul in 1920. Later, a coffee house in Eyüp was called the Pierre Loti coffee house. Today, the hill where this coffee house stands is also known as Pierre Loti Hill.

The area is especially appealing if you are exploring historic parts of the city beyond the old center. If your itinerary also includes well-known landmarks, you may want to pair your visit with places such as Galata Tower for another memorable city view.

Pierre Loti Hill and Its Atmosphere

One of the main reasons people come here is the panorama. The hill offers a sweeping outlook over the Golden Horn, creating a peaceful contrast with Istanbul's busy urban rhythm. That combination of a historic setting, a famous literary connection, and a scenic café experience is what gives Pierre Loti its lasting appeal.

Many visitors come not only for the photograph-worthy view but also for the slower pace. Sitting at the coffee house and taking in the landscape remains one of the simplest pleasures of the area. If you want to understand why Pierre Loti is often listed among Istanbul's must-see spots, the atmosphere alone explains it.

What Are the Other Historical Places in Pierre Loti?

Pierre Loti has several historical attractions, including İdris-i Bitlisi Sıbyan Mektebi, the Fountain of Rayet Keşan Kalfa, the Sepulcher of Mevlevi İskender Dede, and the Wishing Well.

İdris-i Bitlisi Sıbyan Mektebi was an educational institution of the Ottoman Empire, part of a wider system established in cities and towns. Its name comes from the important Ottoman historian İdris-i Bitlisi, who served as a military judge in the period of Yavuz Sultan Selim.

The Fountain of Rayet Keşan Kalfa dates back to 1868. Its name came from one of the bondwomen of Sultan Abdulaziz because she rebuilt it.

The sepulcher belonged to a Mevlevi named İskender Dede, who died in 1589. In front of the tomb, which was once located in a garden decorated with large plane trees and cypress trees, there are two wells. One of them is the famous wishing well.

After visiting these historical sites, you can sit at Pierre Loti's coffee house and enjoy the view of the Golden Horn. The wider Eyüp area also connects well with neighborhoods that reveal Istanbul's layered past, including Balat.

Why Visit Pierre Loti?

  • Scenic views: It is one of the classic places to look out over the Golden Horn.
  • Literary heritage: The site is closely associated with the life and memory of Pierre Loti.
  • Historic atmosphere: The area includes small but meaningful historical landmarks.
  • Relaxed experience: It offers a calmer, more pastoral side of Istanbul within the city.

Planning Your Visit

Pierre Loti is best suited to travelers who enjoy combining views, history, and a slower café stop in one outing. Since details such as transport options or venue information can change over time, it is best to check official local resources before you go. The area works well as a half-day stop, especially if you are already exploring Eyüp and the shores of the Golden Horn.
