Pierre Loti, born in France, was a naval officer and writer. He visited Istanbul many times and became fascinated with Turkish culture, calling himself a "Turcophile." He wrote about his experiences in the city, including his novel Aziyadé. He strongly supported Turkey during the Balkan Wars and World War I and became an honorary citizen of Istanbul in 1920. In recognition of his contributions, a café in Eyüp was named after him, and the hill continues to carry his name today.
