Inside the Military Museum

The Military Museum in Istanbul, also known as the Harbiye Military Museum, is one of the biggest and most distinctive museums of its kind. Around 9,000 of the museum’s approximately 55,000 military relics are displayed across 30 spacious saloons. Visitors can see swords, rifles, armor, maces, tents, flags, military costumes, banners, and personal belongings of well-known soldiers.

The displays are organized by period and theme, which makes the collection easier to follow. The museum’s eastern section is used for exhibitions, gatherings, and social activities, while the main military artifacts are presented in separate saloons across two floors.

On the ground floor, there are 21 saloons covering subjects such as the introduction to the museum, the foundation of the Turkish Army, the Seljuks, the Ottoman founding and rising periods, the greatest Turkish empires, Mehmed the Conqueror, Sultan Selim I, edged weapons, the conquest of Istanbul, defense weapons, firearms, Harbiye student Atatürk, cannon models, Somalia, Bosnia and Kosovo, internal security, marksmanship, and horsemanship.

On the second floor, 11 saloons focus on the constitutional era, the First World War, the Gallipoli Wars, the War of Independence, the Korea-Cyprus issue, ethnographic and manuscript works, chiefs of defense, Atatürk, tents, the Selim III column, and the Armenian issue with documents.

On days when the museum is open, Janissary Band concerts are held between 3 and 4 PM. This gives visitors a chance to explore the galleries while listening to the famous Janissary March. If you come across this historic band elsewhere in the city, it is also worth seeing, as they perform for special occasions around the country.

Military Museum Istanbul location

Military Museum

The Istanbul Army Museum is located in Harbiye, in the Şişli district. One of the easiest ways to reach it is by taking the M2 Yenikapı–Hacıosman metro line and getting off at Osmanbey. From there, it is about a 10-minute walk once you follow your navigation app.

You can also walk to the museum from Taksim Square. Osmanbey is a little closer, but Taksim is still a practical option if you are already in the area.

Another option is to use IETT buses. Since Şişli is a central district and Harbiye is one of its busiest points, many buses stop nearby. These include 25G, 32T, 35C, 36T, 38T, 43, 46E, 46H, 46KT, 46T, 46, and 48N. After getting off at the Harbiye stop, the museum is very close and can be seen from the road.

For current public transportation details, it is useful to check the official Metro Istanbul and IETT websites before you go.

Visiting the Military Museum

The Military Museum is open every day except Mondays, Tuesdays, January 1, and the first days of religious holidays. According to the available information, the museum is open from 9 AM to 4.30 PM. Adult admission is listed as 50 Turkish Liras, and students can enter free of charge. As ticket prices and schedules may change, it is best to check the official site or current local listings before your visit.

Because the museum is in a central part of the city, it can be combined easily with other well-known Istanbul stops. If you are planning a broader cultural route, you may also want to visit Dolmabahce Palace or continue toward Hagia Sophia on another day.

If you are interested in more than military history, there are other museums nearby as well. Visitors looking for modern art often add the Pera Museum to their plans. For sports fans, the Galatasaray and Beşiktaş museums are also close by and offer a different perspective on the country’s cultural history.

The Military Museum is especially rewarding for travelers who enjoy historical objects presented in depth. With its large collection, themed saloons, and live Janissary Band performances, it offers a focused museum experience in one of Istanbul’s most accessible neighborhoods.

Fascinating History of Blue Mosque

The fascinating story of building such a great mosque starts during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I, who built Blue Mosque Istanbul with the mastery construction done by the architect Sedefkar Mehmet Aga. The reason why was the Blue Mosque constructed is very comprehensible because it was hundred years after Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent’s reign when the Ottoman dynasty took the power to control the lands and seas over three continents.
