Maiden's Tower - Kiz Kulesi

Maiden Tower

Maiden Tower is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, known for its charming silhouette, beautiful Bosphorus scenery, and the touching stories connected to it. The tower stands on a tiny islet to the southwest of the Bosphorus on the Asian side, about 200 meters from the coast of Üsküdar, and it can be reached only by boat within a few minutes. A common way to get there is by ferry from Kabataş or by boat from Salacak near Üsküdar. Seen in many of the city’s most memorable views, it is often compared with Galata Tower as another enduring symbol of Istanbul’s layered past.

Maiden Tower history from Byzantine times

In postcard-like views of Istanbul, the tower often appears as a lonely figure at sunset, with the shadowy outlines of minarets behind it. This picturesque image also reflects a long historical background that reaches back to the Byzantine era. The design of the tower is often associated with other Byzantine-era symbols of the city.

It is not exactly known when the structure was first built, but records indicate that Commander Alcibiades of Athens built a tower at the entrance of the Bosphorus around 410 BC to control the waterway. A chain extending from land to the tower was used to create a customs checkpoint for passing ships. It is also said that King Chares placed a basilica here for his wife Damalis around 340 BC.

During the East Roman period, Emperor Alexius Comnenus built a strong defense structure on this rocky islet and renamed it “arcla,” meaning a small tower. Later, the tower served as a shelter for Venetian fleets when they came to protect the city during the Ottoman siege. Under the Ottomans, the tower was rebuilt in stone, and Sultan Mahmud II’s signature was inscribed on one of its marble columns by the famous calligrapher Rakım Efendi in 1857. Like the tower’s role in controlling the waterway, it also functioned as a checkpoint and lighthouse and was used as a quarantine house during cholera epidemics in the 19th century. After a detailed renovation project, the tower gained its more recent museum and restaurant function in 1998.

Legends of Maiden Tower

The legends surrounding the tower are one of the main reasons it continues to fascinate visitors. Stories of love, longing, courage, and grief have all become part of its identity.

The legend of Leandros

According to one of the best-known stories, a young man named Leandros fell in love with a beautiful girl named Hero, who lived in the tower. Every night, Leandros swam across the water, guided by Hero’s light. One stormy night, the wind blew out her lantern, and Leandros lost his way in the Bosphorus and drowned. When his body reached the tower, Hero, overcome with grief, took her own life. Because of this tragic tale, the structure is sometimes also called Leander’s Tower.

The princess legend

Another famous story tells of a Byzantine princess whose father tried to protect her from an oracle’s prophecy that she would die at the age of 18 from a serpent’s bite. The emperor had the tower used as a safe place, isolated from danger. Yet despite all efforts, the prophecy came true when a snake hidden in a fruit basket reached the princess and killed her.

The legend of Battalgazi

A third legend says that Battalgazi, the son of a Christian ruler, fell in love with Tekfur’s daughter. To keep them apart, Tekfur had his daughter locked in the tower. Battalgazi later stormed the tower and carried her away.

How to visit Maiden Tower Istanbul

The tower’s rich history and legendary atmosphere attract many visitors every year. One of the most common questions is how to reach it. Since access is by sea, there are two commonly mentioned routes. If you take the ferry from Kabataş, the ride takes about 10 minutes. If you are on the Asian side, taking a boat from Salacak in Üsküdar is the shorter option and takes about 1 minute.

The original ferry and boat schedules often change over time, so it is best to check the official transport or venue sources before your visit. For wider city travel planning, the official public transport network at IETT can help you organize your route to Üsküdar or Kabataş.

If you are exploring the Bosphorus in one day, combining the area with a Bosphorus Cruise can be a practical way to see the tower from the water while also enjoying other famous waterfront views. Visitors staying on the Asian side may also consider nearby highlights such as Beylerbeyi Palace.

Opening hours, dining, and atmosphere

According to the original visit information in this guide, the museum opens after 09:00 every day and closes at 19:00, while the evening ambiance may continue until 22:00. The tower has also been known for its restaurant, where visitors can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or a meal with a 360-degree view of the city. Reservations may be required for restaurant service.

As opening hours and service details can change, it is wise to check the official site before making plans, especially if you are visiting for dining rather than a standard museum stop.

Tips for a Maiden Tower visit

When planning a visit, many travelers look for the most practical and time-efficient options. The original text notes that ticket prices were relatively affordable and that standard tickets for adults, along with discounted options for students and visitors over 60, were available. Since pricing may change, check the official site for the latest information.

If you want to include the tower in a broader city itinerary, a guided Bosphorus boat tour that includes Üsküdar and views of the tower can be a good choice. This can save time while adding context through guided commentary in different languages.

Even if you do not enter the tower itself, one of the most enjoyable ways to appreciate it is to sit along the shore, drink tea, and watch the Bosphorus. From that angle, the tower’s legendary image feels very much alive, especially at sunset.

Why Maiden Tower remains unforgettable

Few places in Istanbul bring together landscape, memory, and legend as naturally as this small tower off Üsküdar. Whether you are interested in ancient history, Byzantine and Ottoman layers, local myths, or simply one of the city’s most photogenic viewpoints, the tower remains one of the most recognizable attractions in Istanbul. A visit offers not only a close look at the structure itself, but also the chance to experience the Marmara and Bosphorus setting that made it famous in the first place.
