Brief History of the Historical Flower Passage

The historical flower passage is located on the connection between İstiklal Street and Sahne Street in Beyoğlu. Today, it stands out for its rows of historic cafés, shops, and restaurants, but this was not its original purpose. Before the present arcade was built, the site was occupied by the Naum Theater, which was heavily damaged in the Pera Fire of 1870.

During the Tanzimat period, Sultan Abdulhamid and Sultan Abdulaziz used to attend the famous Naum Theater. After the 1870 fire, the property was purchased by the Ottoman Greek banker Hristaki Zoğrafos Efendi, and architect Kleanthis Zannos designed the current building. Completed in 1876, the new structure included 24 Parisian-style shops on the ground floor, a fashionable concept at the time, and 18 luxury apartments above them.

The first establishment to open in the passage was Yorgo’s Winehouse, which still exists and can still be visited. When the arcade first opened, it also housed Acemyan’s tobacco shop, Maison Parret, Vallaury’s patisserie, a Japanese store, a natural florist, Pandelis’ flower shop, Schumacher’s bakery, Papadopoulos’ bookbinding shop, and Keserciyan’s tailor shop.

In 1908, after the building passed to Grand Vizier Said Pasha, the passage was renamed Sait Pasha Pass. During the Armistice years around the 1940s, florists began settling in the small shops here. After the October Revolution, Russian women, baronesses, and duchesses who had fled the country also became flower sellers in the area. For a period, Cite de Pera was used as a flower auction place, and as Beyoğlu florists gathered in the arcade, the name gradually changed to “Flower Passage.” Even after the florists left and beer houses and taverns became more common in the 1940s, the nostalgic name remained.

The passage did not receive proper care or maintenance until 1988. Later, the municipality supported a revival project under the “Association for the Survival and Beautification of the Flower Passage.” The goal was to restore the historic arcade and return it to active use. After the project was completed, Flower Passage began operating again in 2005.
