Coffee Shops

These places are not just about coffee or tea. They are also part of the city’s daily rhythm, offering peaceful corners near major sights such as Sultanahmet Square, Galata Tower, and the Bosphorus shore. If you want a more local and memorable cafe break, the following spots are worth knowing.

Historic coffee shops in Istanbul

Çorlulu Ali Paşa Café

This building is originally a medrese (school) and part of the Çorlulu Ali Paşa Mosque. It was named after the vizier Ali Paşa, who came from Çorlu city. The historical atmosphere of this café offers a very peaceful environment that many visitors love, and nearly all people agree that it is one of the best cafes to drink sheesha, or nargila as it is called in Turkish.

Visiting this place feels like travelling to another planet because of its calm atmosphere, away from city traffic and busy streets. It welcomes visitors from 7 AM to 2 AM and is located in Sultan Ahmet Square, between the trees and greenery. You can reach it on foot after getting off at Beyazit or Sultanahmet station. While you are in the area, you may also want to explore nearby landmarks such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.

Galata Konak Café

This café was originally a patisserie shop founded in 1975 by the Aki family. It became one of the very famous shops in the old town of Istanbul because of its tasty crispy cakes and daily fresh baked pastries.

By 2006, the new generation of the Aki family decided to turn the shop into a café and add more options to the menu. Galata Konak Café is one of the most peaceful and cozy cafes in Istanbul. It can host 150 customers on the open terrace overlooking the historic center of the city.

Probably the most interesting thing about this café is its 360-degree view over many famous monuments, including Galata Tower, the Blue Mosque, and Hagia Sophia. The café is open between 9 AM and 1 AM and is located in Beyoğlu District on Hacı Ali Street.

As advice, it is better to visit the café during April at night, when the weather is absolutely amazing and the view becomes even more charming.

Erol Taş Café

Erol Taş Café is one of the most iconic cafes in Istanbul. It is full of Yeşilçam film posters and pictures. These films were among the most successful in Turkey during the 1950s and left a significant mark on Turkish culture. For general background on Yeşilçam and Turkish cinema, you can also check Wikipedia’s overview of cinema in Turkey.

With its wooden walls covered in posters and pictures of film heroes, and with an open terrace that is perfect for drinking a Turkish coffee with a cigarette, this café is considered one of the most popular cafes in the city. If you are a fan of Turkish coffee, then you should try one at Erol Taş Café; it is known as very delicious and strong.

Erol Taş Café welcomes visitors from 7 AM to midnight and is located in Cankurtaran Square. Its setting also makes it a convenient stop while exploring the historic peninsula and nearby monuments.

Çengelköy Çınaraltı

This café is located in Çengelköy, which was first inhabited during the 5th century. The place reflects the old life of the Bosphorus, and locals tend to visit it often because of the truly peaceful environment, especially when sitting under the tree that is estimated to be 900 years old.

One of the things that is really good about this place is that you can bring any kind of food with you: sandwiches, Turkish desserts, famous Turkish börek, or any other food from your house or from local shops around the area. All you need to take care of is leaving your spot as clean as you found it.

You can go there at any time because the atmosphere is absolutely amazing, but as advice, it would be even better to have breakfast there with a hot cup of Turkish tea. This place is open for everyone and is located in Çengelköy. You can reach it from Eminönü if you are staying on the European side of Istanbul, or from Üsküdar if you are staying on the Asian side. Why visit these coffee shops?

What makes these cafes special is not only the drinks. Each one offers a different side of Istanbul: Ottoman atmosphere, panoramic terraces, memories of Turkish cinema, or relaxed Bosphorus life under a centuries-old tree. If you want your break to feel like part of the trip rather than just a stop between attractions, these places stand out.

  • Çorlulu Ali Paşa Café for history and nargila
  • Galata Konak Café for sweeping views over Istanbul
  • Erol Taş Café for Yeşilçam nostalgia and strong Turkish coffee
  • Çengelköy Çınaraltı for Bosphorus atmosphere and a local breakfast feeling

Whether you are sightseeing around Sultanahmet or crossing between the European and Asian sides, these historical cafes can add a calm and memorable pause to your Istanbul experience.
