Public Baths and Hamam Culture
Turkish baths in Istanbul are part of a long bathing tradition that reaches back to Ancient Rome and continued as an important element of the Ottoman Empire. With their special architecture that allows hot and cold water to be provided at the same time, hamams became an essential part of city life. What Is a Hamam?
A hamam can be briefly and traditionally defined as “a place to clean oneself up, to be purified, and to find recovery.” In architectural terms, hamams share some features with mosques, especially in their domes and spatial rhythm.
The popularity of Turkish baths also has an Islamic basis. It is believed that if water touches a body, that water is no longer clean, so it is not possible to clean oneself with it again. For that reason, places providing flowing water were needed, and kurnas (bath basins) became a defining part of hamams. Roman public baths generally lack kurnas.

Cağaloğlu Hamam
One of the biggest double hamams in Istanbul, Cağaloğlu Hamamı was built in the era of Mahmut I with Baroque architecture. It differs from classical Ottoman architecture with its hot and cold sections. This 300-year-old hamam provides separate sections for male and female visitors.
Cağaloğlu is the last big hamam built in the Ottoman era and was put on the list of 1000 must-see places before you die by the New York Times.

Süleymaniye Hamam
Süleymaniye Hamamı has been one of the beauties of Istanbul with its domes and chimes since 1557. Sinan the Imperial Architect (Mimar Sinan) declared this hamam one of his masterpieces. Along with the hamam, the Suleymaniye Mosque was also built, and together they show Mimar Sinan’s brilliance in architecture.
Süleymaniye Hamamı has 3 sections: one for women, one for men, and one private lodge that used to belong only to Kanuni Sultan Süleyman. Nowadays, the hamam generally attracts foreign visitors more than locals and remains a must-see Ottoman-era monument in Istanbul.

Çinili Hamam (Tiled Hamam)
Historical Çinili Hamam was built by order of Kösem Sultan, one of the strongest women of the Ottoman era. Unfortunately, she could not see the hamam completed with the lovely tiles adorning it. Over the years, most of the tiles were stolen, but during renovation, the hamam was adorned again with blue tiles, echoing its original appearance.
This historical hamam has hosted many photographers, TV series, and art projects thanks to its beauty. Çinili Hamam is still in service with its high-domed male and female sections, providing kese, bubble massage, and oil massage for women.

Historical Gedikpaşa Hamam
One of the most important Ottoman architectural artifacts, Historical Gedikpaşa Hamamı is also notable for its location very close to the Grand Bazaar. Built in 1475 by Ahmet Pasha, this hamam is the only historical one with a sauna right next to the navel stone. It is also one of Istanbul’s double hamams, with both female and male sections.

Historical Galatasaray Hamam
Historical Galatasaray Hamam is among the most popular historical hamams of Istanbul, both for its beautiful architecture and for being in Beyoğlu, right in the heart of the city.
It was built in 1484 along with the beautiful building of Galatasaray High School at the wish of Sultan Beyazıt, and it was visited by many admirals, kadis (religious judges), grand viziers, and sultans. Now it is your turn to visit this magnificent place.

Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam
Named after the world-famous Ottoman navy soldier Kılıç Ali Paşa, Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam has become a symbol of Tophane, Istanbul. This historical hamam is, not surprisingly, a work of Mimar Sinan, and it is guessed to have been built between 1578 and 1583. Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam is distinguished from other hamams by its domes adorned with elephant-eyes. You can also visit the small souvenir shop of the historical hamam.
It is also possible to organize events such as bride or groom hamam gatherings, or you may simply visit on your own, keeping in mind that mornings are reserved for women and evenings are reserved for men. Çemberlitaş Hamam
Another historical hamam close to the Grand Bazaar is Çemberlitaş Hamam. Built in 1584 at the wish of Banu Sultan, this historical bath also carries the signature of Mimar Sinan and is a double hamam with both male and female sections. Another interesting feature is the Ottoman inscriptions on the navel stone.
This hamam is known by several names, including Gül Hamam (Hamam of Rose) and Valide Sultan Hamam. It is also called the Hamam of Murat III in the famous Seyahatnâme of Evliya Çelebi. Today, you can simply find it as Çemberlitaş Hamam and enjoy a relaxing bath.
