About

The Cistern of Theodosius: A Hidden Treasure in Istanbul

Beneath the busy streets of Istanbul, you'll find the Cistern of Theodosius (also known as the Serefiye Cistern), an ancient structure that offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's rich history and impressive engineering. While many tourists visit the famous Basilica Cistern, the Cistern of Theodosius remains a hidden gem, showcasing the engineering prowess of the Byzantine era.

From Byzantine to Ottoman Times

The Cistern of Theodosius was built during the rule of Emperor Theodosius II (408-450 AD) to store water for the city, especially during droughts or attacks. It was later expanded by the Ottomans, who left their mark on the structure. The cistern's design and its large, marble columns demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship of its builders.

Beautiful and Strong Design

Measuring 24 by 40 meters and with a ceiling 11 meters high, the Cistern of Theodosius is supported by 32 columns made from marble from Marmara Island. The walls are coated with a special plaster to prevent leaks. The thick walls and curved corners were designed to endure immense pressure, with 45 sail-shaped vaults that blend function and beauty in a harmonious design.

Rediscovered and Restored

The cistern was hidden for centuries, but in 2010, nearby buildings were demolished, revealing the structure. It was subsequently restored, and an archaeological park was built around it. The area has changed a great deal over time, with the Arif Pasa Estate, built in the 18th or 19th century, once serving as the location for city offices.

Experience the Cistern of Theodosius Today

Today, visitors can explore the Cistern of Theodosius in a new way, thanks to modern technology. It features a 360° projection system—the first of its kind in a museum—allowing visitors to explore the history of the cistern and Istanbul's water systems in 3D. The projection also includes stunning traditional Turkish tiles. One section of the show even touches on the founding of the Turkish Republic, linking the cistern to Istanbul's more recent history.

If you're planning a visit, you'll find that the Cistern of Theodosius price is quite reasonable compared to other historical sites in the city. The experience is made even more magical with the Cistern of Theodosius light show, which highlights the architecture and history in a mesmerizing way.

Step Back in Time

The Cistern of Theodosius is much more than just an ancient structure. It’s a place where history intersects with new technology. As you wander through this fascinating site, you'll uncover the story of Istanbul, from its Byzantine foundations to its modern-day transformation.

You can also buy an Istanbul Tourist Pass® to cover your costs while visiting Istanbul. The Pass gives you access to over 100 must-see places in the city. You can enjoy your time without worrying about waiting in lines or tour times.
