Istanbul Opera House

Süreyya Opera House, also known as the Süreyya Cultural Center, is an opera hall in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district. Designed by the Ottoman Armenian architect Kegam Kavafyan by order of Deputy for Istanbul Süreyya, it was originally established in 1927 as the first musical theater on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. However, because of inadequate theater facilities and equipment at the time, operettas were never staged there. The venue then served as a film theater until a major renovation allowed it to reopen as an opera house at the end of 2007.

History of Istanbul Opera House

Süreyya Pasha began construction in 1924 to answer Kadıköy’s need for a venue for cultural and social events. During his visits to Europe, he was impressed by the glamour of famous theaters there. That influence can be seen in the building: the hall reflects an Art Deco style based on the Champs-Élysées Theater in Paris, while the interior also shows German architectural influence. By the order of Istanbul deputy Süreyya, Kegham Kavafyan was appointed architect, and the building was completed in 1927.

Opened on March 6, 1927 under the name Süreyya Opereti, the theater became the first of its kind on Istanbul’s Asian side and the sixth in the whole city. This status gives the building an important place in the cultural history of Istanbul.

The ballroom on the second floor served as a wedding hall for many years. It also hosted the theater group “Kadıköy Sahnesi” (Kadıköy Stage) for five years beginning in 1959. Later, this room was used as a clothing workshop, showing how the building adapted to changing needs over the decades.

Renovation and Reopening

At the beginning of 2006, Kadıköy Municipality initiated a renovation project after the Darüşafaka Association leased the building for a 40-year period in August 2005. The reconstruction included the ceiling and wall frescoes as well as the façade sculptures. The works lasted almost two years, and the cost amounted to around 14 million Turkish Liras.

On 14 December 2007, Süreyya Opera House reopened with Ahmet Adnan Saygun’s oratorio Yunus Emre (Opus 26). In this way, after 80 years, Süreyya Pasha’s dream of a real opera house finally came true.

Inside the Building

The stage of the theater measures 14 meters long, 10 meters deep, and 4.90 meters high, with a newly added orchestral pit. There are also 14 dressing rooms, all created without changing the building’s architecture. The opera house has a seating capacity of 570, while the second-floor ballroom can host 500 guests.

The venue is home to State Opera and Ballet in Istanbul. It presents opera and dance shows three days a week and also frequently hosts art displays and celebrations, including events such as the Republic Day Ball.

Events at Süreyya Opera House

According to the original information about the venue, the official website is the best place to check upcoming events and book tickets. Programs are described as almost daily and may include instrumental concerts, Four Pianos, Children Opera, Ballet, Children Music, Oratoryo-Bale, and romantic-classical opera. As schedules can change, it is best to confirm current listings on the official channels before your visit.

If you are already exploring the city, a performance here pairs well with time on the Asian side after visiting central landmarks such as Taksim Square. Travelers interested in Istanbul’s cultural layers may also want to compare the performing arts atmosphere here with the historic character of places like Hagia Irene, another notable venue connected with music and events.

How to Get to Süreyya Opera House in Kadıköy

You can reach the opera house by taking minibuses departing from Taksim Square directly to Kadıköy. From there, you can walk the remaining distance through lively Kadıköy or use the Kadıköy tram to get closer to the building.

For updated public transport options, it is also useful to check official transit resources such as Metro Istanbul. If you want a general background on the venue before you go, Wikipedia’s Süreyya Opera House entry offers a quick overview as well.

Because Kadıköy is one of Istanbul’s most enjoyable districts for walking, many visitors combine a show with time in nearby streets, cafés, and shops. That makes Süreyya Opera House not only a performance venue but also part of a full neighborhood experience on the Asian side of the city.

Why Visit the Istanbul Opera House?

Süreyya Opera House stands out for its architecture, long cultural story, and revived purpose. It began as an ambitious project in the 1920s, passed through decades of changing use, and eventually became the opera venue Süreyya Pasha had imagined. For travelers who want more than the standard sightseeing route, it adds another side of Istanbul to discover.

Whether you go for the history, the building itself, or an evening performance, this opera house gives you a glimpse into the city’s cultural life in Kadıköy. If you are planning a broader itinerary, it can easily complement visits to major historic sites on the European side while showing you a different rhythm of Istanbul.
