Flea Markets In Istanbul

Flea markets in Istanbul are known locally as pazar, and almost every district has its own regular market area, sometimes with additional open-air market days. These markets can include furniture, antiques, clothes, and even food. Food is not exactly flea-market stock, of course, but many people still head to a pazar to buy vegetables, fruit, cheese, and other everyday items. Some markets focus on a narrower category, such as furniture only.

Flea Markets In Istanbul

What makes these places so attractive is their affordable pricing. Products sold in a pazar are often cheaper than in regular shops, which is why many locals prefer buying food and household items there. As you walk through Istanbul’s markets, you may notice that many products are not actually old or worn-out at all. They are simply inexpensive. That said, you can still find genuinely vintage pieces such as an old radio, a bed in good condition, a clock, Ottoman-era items, and small handmade goods.

Istanbul has many markets of this kind across both the European and Asian sides. Below are some of the best-known flea markets and second-hand shopping spots in the city.

Flea markets in Istanbul: where to go

Ferikoy Flea Market

Every Sunday, a large area normally used as a car park turns into an open market filled with tables lined up side by side. Sellers display their own items, some old and some newly made by hand. You may come across Ottoman-era Turkish Bath (Hammam) taps, old door knobs, and decorative pieces, along with handmade goods such as pearl coasters.

Part of the pleasure of browsing Ferikoy is the food. As you continue through the market, you may find a table serving fresh Turkish tea and toasted sausage sandwiches. Keep going and you are likely to be drawn by the smell of gozleme, a Turkish dish made of dough filled with cheese or meat and cooked on a grill.

Ferikoy Flea Market is open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 7:00 pm. It is on the European side of Istanbul in the Osmanbey area, near Taksim Square.

Tuesday Market (Sali Pazari)

The Tuesday Bazaar is also held on a Friday. This open market is striking for its colors, energy, and the sheer number of products and people. It offers a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, freshly pressed olive oil sold in unlabelled bottles, olives in many tastes and styles, dried fruit displayed under large clear plastic domes, cheap clothes, and low-cost imported goods.

At the far end, the market becomes more like a classic flea market, with old bric-a-brac, machine parts, tools, and cutlery. That mix of produce, household shopping, and junk-market discoveries is what gives Sali Pazari its special character.

Tuesday Market, or Sali Pazari, is on the Asian side of Istanbul and starts at 8:00 am, closing at 7:00 pm.

Horhor Bit Pazarı

Horhor Bit Pazarı is a distinctive market in the Fatih neighborhood. Unlike many other markets, Horhor is set inside a seven-floor building hidden among narrow streets, so it can be difficult to find the first time. The sellers here are permanent rather than temporary stallholders.

The focus is on second-hand furniture, antiques, handmade furniture, and wooden home items. Compared with standard furniture stores, Horhor Bit Pazarı is not expensive, though it may not be as cheap as some visitors expect from the phrase “flea market.” If you are already exploring the historic center, it can pair well with a visit to the nearby Grand Bazaar.

Second-hand furniture shops in Istanbul

While walking through Istanbul’s narrower streets, you may notice small shops with old chairs and tables gathered outside, sometimes with a fridge or television as well. These are second-hand furniture shops. They collect furniture that is no longer needed, as long as it can still be used, then polish it, paint it, repair what is broken, and resell it at a cheaper price.

Sometimes you can unexpectedly come across a real masterpiece, something more beautiful or better made than furniture from well-known brands. Often, that comes down to the skill of the person restoring it. In Istanbul, people commonly give away furniture they no longer need rather than simply throwing it out, unless it is beyond use.

What to expect when visiting Istanbul markets

Flea markets are spread across Istanbul on both the Asian and European sides, and people from all walks of life visit them every week. Some come for fresh and affordable produce, others for antiques, restored furniture, tools, or household items that add character to a home.

If you are visiting for the first time, expect a mix rather than a single market style. In one place you may find fresh vegetables and olives; in another, antique fittings, used furniture, or handmade objects. That variety is part of what makes these markets memorable. They are not just places to shop, but also places to observe daily city life.

Tips for browsing flea markets in Istanbul

  • Go early if you want the best selection of goods.
  • Take your time and look carefully, especially in mixed markets where antiques and everyday items sit side by side.
  • Bring cash, as smaller sellers may not accept cards.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, especially for open-air markets and larger market areas.
  • If you are shopping for antiques or furniture, inspect condition closely before buying.

Whether you are looking for cheap produce, old household objects, or unusual decorative pieces, flea markets in Istanbul offer a practical and lively way to experience the city beyond its major sights.
