Kilyos

Kilyos is on the Black Sea coast in the north of Istanbul, quite far from the city center. For many Istanbulites, Kilyos means escaping the chaos of the city. Some of the cleanest sea around Istanbul is found here, and the beaches are known for their smooth, beautiful sand. Many people head here on holidays and especially in summer. However, Kilyos is not only a summer destination. In winter, it offers a different kind of pleasure with its nature, calm atmosphere, and peaceful walking routes.

How to get to Kilyos

Kilyos is 20 km from Maslak and 50 km from the airport. If you are coming by private vehicle, there are two main alternatives: you can use the Bahçeköy pass either via Sarıyer or in the direction of Maslak. The Maslak road passes through Zekeriyaköy and the forest, so it is the more scenic and enjoyable route.

If you prefer public transportation, you first need to get to Sarıyer or Hacıosman. You can reach Kilyos by minibuses departing from Şehit Mithat Yılmaz Street in Sarıyer and by public buses departing in front of Sarıyer Primary School.

If you prefer to reach Kilyos by metro and then continue by bus, you can get off at the Hacıosman metro stop and take public bus number 151. The bus ride takes around 25 minutes. For current routes and service details, it is best to check the official IETT website.

Kilyos in history

Kilyos has long remained a quiet and peaceful fishing town. As an important point where Istanbul ends and the Black Sea begins, it held strategic value during both the Roman and Ottoman Empires. A castle was built at this key location. Built in the 4th century during the Eastern Roman Empire, the castle was later used by the Genoese and the Ottomans. It was also of great use during World War I. Unfortunately, this castle is closed to visitors.

What to do in Kilyos

There are many activities you can enjoy in touch with nature in Kilyos. You can eat fish at well-known local fish restaurants, enjoy the sun and sand on the beaches, and go on long nature walks. Some outdoor restaurants also offer the pleasure of having a barbecue in nature.

The beaches offer surfing and different sea activities as well. However, it is important to be careful about one thing: the Black Sea is known for its wild waves, and swimming can be extremely dangerous even for experienced swimmers. The reverse wave here can be deadly for those in the sea.

You will have to pay a fee to enter the beaches. This fee is updated frequently, so it is wise to carry cash and check current prices before you go. In addition to public beaches, there are also beach clubs. If you want to enjoy the seaside with electronic music, there are venues designed for that kind of summer atmosphere as well.

You can find fresh and delicious fish in Kilyos in every season, so it is worth visiting one of the nearby restaurants before you leave.
