Cruises on the Bosphorus

The Bosphorus is where the city really shows its beauty. With the pass you can join sunset cruises, dinner cruises with shows and different boat trips that pass under the bridges and past the palaces on the shoreline. It is a calm way to rest your feet while you still keep sightseeing.

Audio-guided walking tours

Local guides prepared expert audio guides for you to lead small walking tours in the Old City, Galata, Fener and Balat, Kadikoy and other neighborhoods. These audio guided self-discovery tours help you understand daily life, street food, hidden courtyards and local habits that you might miss on your own.

Cultural shows and experiences

You can watch whirling dervish ceremonies, enjoy Istanbul night shows, taste traditional Turkish desserts and meze and relax in Ottoman style hammams that work with the pass. These experiences add sound, flavor and feeling to your memories.

Family friendly fun

Families can mix culture with play. Aquariums, theme parks and fun centers give children a break from long museum visits while parents still feel that the day is well used. Because a lot is already included, you are more relaxed when kids want to try something new.

Top landmarks with hosted entry and guided access

These are the places most guests remember when they talk about the pass later. Lines can be very long at these sites, so hosted entry and guided access make a big difference. Let’s have a look at the top landmarks in Istanbul for you not to miss out on any of them!

Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace is one of the most popular attractions in the city. With hosted entry you meet the host at the entrance, skip the main ticket line and move directly toward security. Inside, you walk through the courtyards, see the treasury and enjoy the view over the Bosphorus at your own pace.

Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern sits under the Old City and often has a line wrapping around the block. Hosted entry takes away the stress of buying the ticket at the right window. You follow the host, go in together and then take your time inside among the columns and the famous Medusa heads.

Dolmabahce Palace

This palace on the Bosphorus is a must see but the line can be long, especially in high season. With hosted entry you do not wait in the main ticket queue. You go inside with the host and can focus on the chandeliers, the halls and the view instead of watching the clock.

Galata Tower and classic Old City sights

Hosted access to Galata Tower and key Old City sights like Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque is another strong side of the pass. You learn stories, small details and local tips from licensed guides and you do not spend your visit trying to read every signboard.

How the pass works

Using the pass is simple. You buy Istanbul Tourist Pass® online before your trip or even at the last minute, then download the app, log in and decide which day will be your first active day. The countdown starts only when you activate it.

  1. Choose the number of days that matches your stay in the city.
  2. Buy the pass on the official site or on Istanbul.com, where you can see the full list of included attractions and services.
  3. Install the app and log in with the same email.
  4. Check which activities need a quick reservation and which are ready to use.
  5. On the day you want to start, activate the pass and show your QR codes at each experience.

You should have internet on your phone to see the latest times, meeting points and QR codes. Many travelers download what they need on Wi Fi at the hotel in the morning and then use mobile data during the day.

Frequently asked questions

Is the pass really cheaper than separate tickets?

Most visitors save money when they visit several major attractions, join a cruise and do at least one or two guided tours. If you like to explore all day, the pass is almost always cheaper than buying each ticket alone.

Do I have to choose exact attractions in advance?

No. You choose the number of days, not the exact list of attractions. Inside those days you decide what fits your mood, the weather and your energy level.

How does hosted entry work in practice?

You meet the host at the defined meeting point that you see in the app. The host organizes your entrance for that time slot and you move with the group past the main ticket area.

Is the pass good for families with children?

Yes. Because many kid friendly places are included, you do not have to think about extra costs when children ask to visit an aquarium or a fun center. You also avoid long lines, which helps a lot with tired kids.

What if my plans change?

You activate the pass only when you are ready to start using it. Until that moment you can still change the day you want to begin. After activation it counts calendar days, so it is good to start early in the morning.

Your digital travel companion

The Istanbul Tourist Pass® is more than a bundle of tickets. It is a simple way to turn a short stay in Istanbul into a rich and relaxed experience. With one app, clear hosted entry at top sights and the support of a company that has welcomed guests for decades, you can focus on enjoying the city instead of planning it every minute.

February in Istanbul https://istanbul.com/blog/february-in-istanbul/ https://istanbul.com/blog/february-in-istanbul/#respond Wed, 08 Jan 2025 09:45:28 +0000 https://istanbul.com/blog/february-in-istanbul/ Istanbul is a vibrant metropolis and one of the most popular destinations worldwide. Millions pass through Istanbul every year, and its strategic position on two continents, an unavoidable layover when flying between East and West, makes it a perfect pit stop. So, if you choose to visit this awesome city in February, don’t be scared. If February is not quite the favorite travel month of everybody, it shouldn’t discourage anyone from coming to Istanbul.

February is actually one of my favorite months to visit Istanbul, and there are plenty of pros to doing this in winter (and some people would even say it’s the best season to visit!).
If you plan to visit Istanbul in February 2025, there are a few things you should consider when making travel plans. In this February guide, we’ll discuss the type of weather you can expect, recommended places to visit, events on the calendar, and, of course, our insider tips.

Weather in February 2025

February could be the coldest month of the year. Like most of the other European cities, Istanbul is the heart of winter in February. The temperatures are milder than in Central Europe, but in February it is also snowing in Istanbul. Actually this year, thanks to global warming, we expect more rainy days than snowy ones.

As a coastline city, Istanbul has highly variable daytime temperatures. Daytime averages of 7°C (45°F), and maximums around 10°C (50°F) – 12°C (54°F), and overnight lows of 3°C (37°F) – 4°C (39°F) are expected. As I said earlier, we don’t forecast snow in Istanbul in February 2025, but the number of rainy days will be significant. At the end part of the month, we expect sunny days.

What to Wear in February 2025

In February, it will be cold and rainy in Istanbul; however, this year we do not hope for snow, unlike the previous years. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be cold; quite the opposite, bring your light snow gear and warm coats. 10 rainy days are expected in February, hence a good idea to take your waterproof shoes. Gloves and wool hats are also good to have.

But don’t over-pack, as indoors will be warm. For anything thicker, you can buy it easily in Istanbul. With the recent economic circumstances, Istanbul is now a paradise for shopping lovers, especially if you decide to buy textiles. You can find quality clothes, coats, and boots for a steal. And definitely do not pack an umbrella! Right after a raindrop falls, umbrella sellers magically appear on the streets of Istanbul.

Should You Visit Istanbul in February 2025?

Yes, February is a perfect month to visit Istanbul. This is a yes for sure if you love cold weather, hot drinks, and smaller crowds. If you come in February 2025, you’ll find yourself seeking shelter to shelter from windy spells, cool temperatures, and rain more. Therefore, it is essential to search for the best indoor attractions this astonishing city will deliver. Happily, most of Istanbul’s best sights are inside, or mostly indoors, even when it’s raining cats and dogs.

We have said before that we expect a warmer February than average for this year; So, particularly if that Valentine’s Day travel period is something you have on your mind, do not investigate too much — just purchase your plane tickets!

Hagia Sophia was protected by the Ottomans; at this time, the symbol of power and superiority was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. The Museum plays a vital role since it represents the city’s spirit.

Another tourist attraction is the Flower Passage in İstiklal. General information about Flower Passage is that it was initially a theater in the 1800s. After a fire, it was converted into a place consisting of posh shops. People were coming to this passage to sell flowers. That’s why it’s named Flower Passage. Prepaid SIM Card Options

However, if you don't plan on using these free internet connectivity options, there are SIM Card options available for tourists in Istanbul. The first thing you need to have in mind is to find the right provider for you. Before deciding on your operator, be sure that you check if the internet provider operates in your area.

There are three network providers in Turkey; Turkcell, Vodafone, and Turk Telekom. Turkcell is the most preferred one among the others. But don't forget that Istanbul is a big city, so you have to do your research well because the service you get might not be available everywhere.

Before moving on to the details of these providers, let's talk about the initial steps you must take. Firstly, you need to carry your passport to get your SIM Card. There are different options available for data packages. We recommend you take your SIM Card to the official stores of these providers.

Turkcell

Turkcell is the most preferred service provider in Turkey. It offers the fastest internet service. The operator has a special welcome pack for tourists. You can get your SIM Card from the nearest Turkcell stores once you come here.

You can visit the official Turkcell website for up-to-date information about the packages.

Vodafone

If you are in a rush and want to get a SIM Card as soon as you land, Vodafone can be a great choice. You can find Vodafone stores at the airports. They have a specialized tourist package as well.

Please, visit the official Vodafone website for further information.

Turk Telekom

Turk Telekom has less extensive coverage in Turkey compared to its competitors. But, it has local SIM Card options as well. You can buy your local SIM Card in Turk Telekom stores.

For detailed information, check the official Turk Telekom website.

Making Phone Calls From and To Turkey

Last but not least, once you have your internet in Istanbul, you might wonder how to make phone calls within and to Turkey. This practical guide will give you the general information of making phone calls in Istanbul, Turkey.

All Turkish mobile phone numbers include 10 digits; beginning with 0 and followed by 3 digits of city code. The rest contains 7 digits local numbers.  To make international calls to Turkey, you need to know the country code first.

Country Code for Turkey: 90 – City code for the European side is 0212 and the city code for Asian side is 0216.

For this reason, you can evaluate the Turkish SIM Card options before coming to the country.

When traveling as a tourist, you must also provide internet access without wifi devices. Especially if you want to discover Istanbul, some places and roads will seem a little complicated to you. The most used phone feature of tourists today maps, and you definitely need to get the Internet. You may continue to use the internet of your own sim card, but if your stay in Turkey is prolonged, the money you will pay may also increase.

Getting a Turkish SIM Card

Everything can be easier for you if you do some research on the Turkish SIM Card before coming to the country. Knowing in advance where you can get the Turkish SIM Card from the country can also protect you from financial loss.

Are you a tourist and a foreign traveler coming to discover Istanbul? Then you can get general information about a large airport such as Istanbul airport in advance and look at the sim card options. After your plane lands at Istanbul's modern airports, you can start using the airport's Internet. After that, you will not be deprived of communication by purchasing a Turkish SIM Card at the airport or from a central location.

Turkish SIM Card can be purchased as prepaid, and it will be quite easy for you to find the package and price options that suit you on some operators. If you have a flight to Istanbul from your own country, it is the right option to get a sim card from the airport or contact certain places for general information. Those who are eager to explore Istanbul know that Istanbul is a big city and there are two airports. Therefore, first, determine which of the SAW or IST Airports you will land at.

It is important to know which airport you are going to land at in order to find out the Turkish SIM Card operators in advance. After installing this sim card, which you will receive only with your tourist information, on your phone, you can conveniently communicate with the tariff you have paid.

Nightlife in Istanbul: District by District https://istanbul.com/blog/nightlife-in-istanbul-district-by-district/ https://istanbul.com/blog/nightlife-in-istanbul-district-by-district/#respond Tue, 29 Nov 2022 23:20:45 +0000 https://istanbul.com/blog/nightlife-in-istanbul-district-by-district/ Taksim

Taksim might be the most well-known district in Istanbul. You can find anything you want to do in Taksim: watch a film in the nostalgic theater, climb up to Galata Tower and watch the city, get drunk and wander between streets, dance like hell, have a sophisticated meal, see an art gallery, attend to a workshop and so on. If we focus specifically to the nightlife Taksim is a whirlwind of colors. It is not wrong to say that the options depending on the food type, music kind, price range and so on are overwhelming in Taksim. You can find various kinds of entertainment from gay clubs, to Türkü (Turkish Folk Music) Bars, from electro clubs to Meyhane’s. The night starts early in Taksim, but ends very late too. Before going home drinkişkembe çorbası (tripe soup) that would help your hangover as a part of a ritual  of going out in Taksim.

Kadıköy

Kadıköy district, located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, is recently getting very popular.  Even though Kadıköy is considered as the Taksim of Asia it offers a unique atmosphere starting from your ferry ride with a magnificent view of the Haydarpaşa Train Station and continuing in the bar street filled with antique wooden mansions that nowadays houses trendy bars, restaurants and cafes. It is also cleaner, cozier and more silent than Taksim. A point you should keep in mind about Kadıköy is that most of the bars are closed after 1 am. contrary to Taksim.  Just some minutes walk from ferry there are also traditional Turkish taverns that serve seafood and Turkish Raki. You can either pick one of the unique bars of Kadıköy like; Buddha, Karga, Arka Oda, Hera or Trip and have an ice cold beer,  you may choose to go to a tavern, take sips from your Raki or get your beer from a market and sit in the seashores, watch some ferries go by.

Karaköy

Bosphorus Bridge on the background of the night coast under the bright moon. Istanbul, Turkey. Night landscape.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Karaköy has been recently the most popular and most rapidly changing district of Istanbul. If we are supposed to call one of these districts “Hipster” that is definitely Karaköy. Almost every day there is a new bar, restaurant or a club opening. Not only bars and restaurants are new here, most of the old smithies, fabrics and ateliers are now art galleries, vintage stores and designer shops. Most of the bars serve delicious and sophisticated food until 10pm. And turn into a dance floor with good music afterwards. Sometimes the party gets carried to the street because of its crowd. There are also specific places only serve as night clubs like Gaspar and Fosil. Karaköy district is more expensive than the other districts in this list with one exception: Ortaköy. The Meyhane’s by the seashore are also very famous to eat Meze or seafood and drink Raki.  Try and explore Karaköy, it will probably be different than what we explained until the moment you get there.

Ortaköy

Ortaköy’s nightlife is more homogeneous compared to the other districts. It is a long coastline filled with fancy, luxurious and beautiful night clubs. Almost all of them have a view of the breathtaking Bosphorus Bridge, one leg in Asia, one leg in Europe. Some of the clubs in Ortaköy for example Reina are so significant and touristic that world-wide known celebrities, government officers, presidents have dined and had fun in. It surely is a privilege to enjoy your drink and dance watching the skyline of Istanbul, its historic and brilliant buildings and the Marmara Sea.  If you go to the center of Ortaköy, right next to the shore and the mosque you will also find not-so expensive bars and clubs too. You can also sit on the shore and grab a beer from a market, watch the sea and the boats on it.

Besiktas

The first thing you would notice in Beşiktaş is its authentic Turkish neighborhood atmosphere. It is a neighborhood hasn’t felt the touch of gentrification so much (yet). Day time you will see people shopping from the arcades, young people practicing  on their skateboards on a warm summer day and people from all ages drinking tea in the tea-sellers on the street. At night the streets around the fish market gets crowded, joyous and drunk. The ones that are so close to the fish market are all surrounded by taverns that serve seafood and Raki. Other places are mostly visited by the young people. The prices are average, not expensive. But the exception about Beşiktaş is the places located on Akaretler Street. There you can find fancy and luxurious bars, lounges and clubs. When the weather is nice a lot of people also prefer to sit on the seashore and drink their beverages, alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

Bagdat Acenur

Bagdat Street is the most famous street of Anatolian side by overshadowing Kadıköy’s bar street. It is more famous for shopping than nightlife.  In addition to be the center of shopping it also has one of the three bar streets of Istanbul.  There are bars and clubs that are a little bit more expensive than the average. It is for sure you will see the most expensive and unique cars that you never saw anywhere before passing by from the Street. It is an 9 mile long street, parallel to the Sea of Marmara, which is very popular among the youth to go there, shop, sip a cafe, drink a cocktail.

Bonus: Caddebostan Coastline

All you need to do here is to bring your sheet to sit on, food and drinks. There you can lay on the grass, smell the sea and have joyous chats with friends. Grass is somewhat clean, you would be surrounded by people who are having fun and feel the atmosphere of an open air festival in the center of the city.

Local and Emergency Services https://istanbul.com/blog/local-and-emergency-services-in-istanbul/ Sun, 27 Nov 2022 22:47:42 +0000 https://istanbul.com/blog/local-and-emergency-services-in-istanbul/ But don't be intimidated by this situation because you can easily find a solution to every emergency in Istanbul. Suppose you become ill or are experiencing a problem such as losing your passport. In that case, it is in your best interest to consult these local services. Let's give you general information about the local service and emergency points that you need to know in your emergencies.

Hospitals and Emergency Departments

There are many public hospitals and private hospitals in Istanbul, and emergency services departments of hospitals work 24/7. One of the most important things you need to know about Istanbul is that the city is quite crowded and lively. However, Turkey's healthcare sector is far ahead of many world countries. In this sense, many foreigners come to Turkey for health purposes. Therefore, you can ensure that the local hospital services, especially in developed cities such as Istanbul, meet your urgent needs quite well.

It may make it easier for you to make an appointment before visiting hospitals or obtain general information based on doctors and hospitals before. But if you are faced with a severe health condition and are not in a position to wait for an appointment, you need to go to the emergency rooms open 24/7. In cases where you have urgent health problems, call the 112 Emergency department, and an ambulance will arrive at the point where you are located. You will be transferred to the emergency rooms closest to you. If you are going to come to the city for the first time, you should look at the emergency service numbers while doing research about Istanbul.

If you want to apply to local health-related services other than hospitals, you can also apply to private polyclinics in your city. These units are small hospitals that have been established related to health, and there are general practitioners. When conducting health-related research about Istanbul, you can often come across private polyclinics. To take advantage of these local services, you can communicate by researching and making an appointment via the Internet.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies are local professional services that you can reach more efficiently in any health-related emergency compared to hospitals. In cases that do not involve serious health problems such as headaches, nausea, or blood pressure drop, you can take advantage of pharmacies that you can find on almost every corner in Istanbul. Having general information about pharmacies' opening and closing times and finding out which days you can reach these places makes you more peaceful on your trips. Sunday Saturdays, except Sunday, these local services operate for six days, including Saturday. Opening hours are between 9 am and 7 pm, but you can also find pharmacies that work late.

These local services are mostly located next to hospitals, but their distance to living quarters is also quite reasonable. Even if you stay in a hotel, at home, or in a hostel and are not close to the hospital, it will not be challenging to get to pharmacies. You can use the Internet to get information about pharmacies on duty in Istanbul, and you can meet your urgent needs.

Local Services of Security

Police stations are one of the most important and necessary local services to be contacted in security-related emergencies. To give general information about the management of these police centers, police stations prevent criminal behavior, take actions to protect the safety of people's lives and property, and act according to public applications. There are police stations in Istanbul that respond to emergency situations in all provinces.

If you suspect a criminal situation related to any situation, you will first contact the nearest police local center by calling 155. But you can also submit your complaints or situations that you want to consult about security to the police stations located in the county where you are located. Moreover, it is quite easy and essential to reach these local centers in cities such as Istanbul because police stations are one of the important places where you should consult about issues related to foreigners, such as passports problems and residence permits.

Security-related centers and issues are some of the important issues that you should get general information about when you collect information about Istanbul.

Examples of Gendarmerie organizations can be given to local centers related to security outside of police centers. To provide general information about the gendarmerie organization centers, these centers ensure the safety and security of the public and take action on crimes committed. If you are faced with an urgent security problem, you can send your complaints by contacting the 156 emergency gendarmerie line. You can easily access the Gendarmerie Command centers located in Istanbul by researching on the Internet.

Also, Provincial Migration Administrations in each province also provide advice on the passport, residence, entry, and exit of foreigners and provide language support. These local services provide a very important consultation for every foreigner who has come to Turkey and directs them, so these services are essential for the sake of security. You can reach the Foreigners Contact Center by calling hotline 157, or you can get general information directly from the Provincial Migration Administrations.
