About the Museum of Innocence

Both a book by Orhan Pamuk and a museum that he founded are titled the Museum of Innocence. Pamuk has been co-creating the novel and museum since the project's inception in the 1990s. The love story, which is set between 1974 and the early 2000s, centers on two families, one wealthy and the other lower middle class, and uses recollections and flashbacks to explain life in Istanbul between 1950 and 2000. In painstakingly organized boxes and display cabinets, the museum showcases the objects that the characters in the book used, wore, heard, saw, gathered, and dreamed about.

Just as it is not necessary to have visited the museum in order to completely enjoy the book, it is not necessary to have read the book in order to enjoy the museum. But readers of the book will have a greater understanding of the museum's numerous meanings, and visitors to the museum will pick up on details they missed while reading the book. The book was released in 2008, and the museum debuted the following spring.

Before You Visit the Museum of Innocence

In 2012, four years after the book's release, the museum finally opened its doors. It's situated in Cukurcuma, Beyoglu, one of the locations described in the book. Between Istiklal Street and Tophane is Cukurcuma. If you plan to use the tramline and use public transportation, you should get off at Tophane. You should first travel from Taksim through Istiklal Street before arriving at Cukurcuma for a more pleasant route. While you are there, you may always take a tour of Istiklal. After seeing the Museum of Innocence, it would be excellent to explore Beyoglu, which is thought of as Istanbul's center.

On foot, it takes 12 minutes to get to Taksim, 8 minutes to get to Galatasaray, and 10 minutes to get to Cihangir from the Museum. The Museum of Innocence and other well-known museums and attractions in Istanbul are extremely accessible to you if you are staying in Taksim. The Marmara Taksim, Mercure Istanbul Taksim, and The Green Park Hotel Taksim are a few of our suggested hotels in Taksim. The working and opening hours of the Museum of Innocence are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. It is open from 10:00 to 18:00 on Thursdays. Only Mondays, January 1st, and the first day of religious holidays are the only days the museum is closed.

Tickets for the Museum of Innocence can be purchased at the front desk every day but Monday from 10 am to 17 pm. If you want to go with a group, you may always get in touch with the museum. The cost of admission to the Museum of Innocence is about 10 euros. If you are a book lover and intend to read the book, you can utilize your invitation to the museum as previously described; the invitation is located on the last page of the book. To find out more about the significance of the items mentioned in the book, you can also arrange trips with a tour guide.

What’s Inside the Museum of Innocence

The museum is divided into five floors, and each area is given a number. Without a doubt, the wall covered in cigarette ends is one of the most well-known exhibits in the museum. Pamuk meticulously depicts and emphasizes smoking activity in the book, thus it is not surprising that visitors are greeted at the museum by a wall of 4,213 cigarettes. Since it depicts Pamuk violating the norms of constructing a museum and presenting what is seen as garbage, almost every visitor has a photo in front of the wall.

Those cigarettes serve as a symbol of a man's level of love, even if it means keeping the cigarettes that his partners have smoked. The remaining items in the collection are a combination of the things that the book's main characters used, such as the fork she used to eat with or the outfits she wore, etc. In order to preserve the mystery of the Museum of Innocence, we won't explain them in detail.

There is a museum store where you can get souvenirs to take home. There are several items, including posters, postcards, book page separators, magnets, and brooches, all of which feature a scene from the book or museum. Even copies of the iconic earrings worn by the main character, which are the most important item on show in the museum, are available. To remember what you saw at the Museum of Innocence, it would be good to take your experience home with you
